Edith Lucille “Meme” Smith

Edith Lucille “Meme” Smith, 87, of High Island, died Wednesday, November 15, 2017. She was born on February 21, 1930, to Clyde and Alma Rucker in Mont Belvieu, Texas. She retired from High Island School after twenty years of service.

Survivors include her brothers, Charles Rucker of Port Aransas, Texas and Jack Rucker of Baytown, Texas; son, Larry Smith and his wife, Letty, of Winnie, Texas; daughters, Sandy Spencer of Honey Island, Texas and Mary Gabbard of Matagorda, Texas; grandchildren, Kim Guidry and Blake Guidry, both of High Island, Tressa Hanly, Jamie LaRive and Clint LaRive, all of Crosby, Alyssha Toronjo of Groves, Chris Guidry of Silsbee, Somer Jacobs of Livingston, Winter Sims of Warren, Corrie Jones of Winnie, and Barry Smith of San Diego, California; twenty-five great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild on the way.

She is preceded in death by her parents; four sisters; husband, Oran Smith, Jr.; and daughter, Sherry Guidry.

A gathering of Mrs. Smith’s family and friends will begin at 11:00 a.m., with her funeral service to follow at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 18, 2017, at First Baptist Church, 1368 Weeks Avenue, High Island. Interment will follow at High Island Cemetery under the direction of Broussard’s 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.

A very special thanks to Corrie for her unfailing devotion to Meme during the last months of her life. Your kindness and love will never be forgotten.
