Joe E. Meloncon

August 28, 1937 - August 15, 2017

Joe E. Meloncon, 79, of Hamshire, died Tuesday, August 15, 2017. He was born August 28, 1937, in Hamshire, to Adonicia Leger Meloncon and Dennis Meloncon.

Joe’s lifetime included accomplishments, which have eluded many.  Most importantly, he was a dedicated “family man”.  His marriage of 54 years was truly until death do us part.  He cared for and raised his four children, as well as the children of others, to have character, morals, honesty, trustworthiness, and taught them the value of hard work, family and education.  He brought family together, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and often the other children he raised for holidays and other gatherings.  He always included his extended family, and welcomed them all.

As a young man, he was an avid rodeo participant, and was a cowboy by trade.  A “simple man” he would be called today, he raised animals and farmed to provide food for his family, it was natural for him.  He worked for Pipkin Ranch, Sabine Ranch, Dorothy Wilber, Hamilton Ranch and Nolte Farms. After retiring, he took up hunting alligators, cleaning ducks for the local hunting club, and fishing whenever he could.  He loved to cook, and people loved to come enjoy his food, including the tenderest alligator ever.

He was a great man, not necessarily in stature, but in character.  He passed down his love of family, his history, and his heritage to others, and shared as much of his great food as he did stories of his life, and life’s lessons.

He is survived by wife, Sandra Bailey Meloncon, of Hamshire; daughters, Janet Lemons and her husband, Riley, of Groves; Melissa Armentor and her husband, Mark, of Stowell; and Lisa Meloncon and her husband, Harry Posner, of Tampa, Florida; son, Dennis Meloncon, of Beaumont; grandsons, Coby Armentor, of Stowell; Jacob Armentor and his wife, Kandyce, of Hamshire; Daniel Armentor, of Winnie; and Nicholas Quintana, of Groves; great-granddaughter, Brooklyne Grace Armentor, of Winnie; great-grandson, Luke Armentor, of Hamshire; sisters, Zola Barton and Rita Cavanagh and her husband, Dave, all of Mississippi; sister-in-law, Mae Alice Meloncon, of LaPorte.

He was preceded in death by parents; sisters, Elsie Burrell and Marie Edgar; brothers, J.C., J.D.”Doc” Meloncon.

A gathering of Mr. Meloncon’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, August 17, 2017, at Broussard’s, 134 West Buccaneer Drive, Winnie. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 18, 2017, at Broussard’s Chapel, Winnie, with interment to follow at Broussard Cemetery, Hamshire.
