John J.D. Melancon

January 29, 1934 - May 16, 2017

John “J.D.” Melancon, 83, of Winnie, died Tuesday, May 17, 2017. He was born January 29, 1934, in Edgerly, Louisiana, to Mamie Kuebedeaux Melancon and Cyprien Buck Melancon. J.D. had been a longtime resident of the Winnie area.

J.D. spent from 1954 to 1956 in the United States Marine Corps. He attained the rank of Corporeal and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, just after the Korean War.

On June 14, 1957, he married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Kier, at the First Baptist Church of Stowell. This union was officiated by his father, the Reverend C.B. Melancon. They would have been married sixty years on June 14, 2017. J.D. and Shirley started their family on May 31, 1959, with the birth of Joel Melancon. On October 2, 1963, they were blessed with the birth of their second son, Johnny Melancon.

J.D. was known for his strong Christian faith, love for family and quick wit. He was also known for his big smile. IF you met him, you would get a hug and told that he loved you. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his grandchildren.

Survived by his wife, Shirley Kier Melancon, of Winnie; sons, Joel K. Melancon, of Winnie; and Johnny H. Melancon, of Devine; brother, Charles R. Melancon, of Oklahoma; sister, Dorothy Jackson, of Woodville; grandsons, Joseph E. Melancon, of Bryan; John D. Melancon, of Winnie; and Joshua E. Melancon, of Dallas; numerous nieces; nephews; other family members; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joshua Melancon and Earl Melancon; and sisters, Hattie Barios and Martha Tacke.

A gathering of Mr. Melancon’s family and friends will begin at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, May 20, 2017 with his memorial service to follow at 1:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Stowell, 117 Van Ostrand, Stowell.. A private committal service was handled by Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont.
