TODAY I WAS AWAKENED WITH THE SAD NEWS OF THE PASSING OF A GOOD FRIEND AND MENTOR. THELMA WAS ONE OF THE FINEST WOMEN I HAVE EVER KNOWN. I WAS SO BLESSED TO HAVE HAD THE PRIVILEGE TO WORK WITH HER AND TO LEARN FROM HER. SHE ASSISTED M E BECOMING A SUCCESSFUL TEACHER. AND CO WORKER. I AM RETIRED NOW, HOWEVER THERE WILL NEVER COME A TIME THAT WHEN I THINK OF MY TEACHING EXPERIENCES I WILL NOT THINK OF THELMA.

Being Thelma Thatcher's younger brother set a lifelong standard for this post-war child growing up in southeast Texas. As I followed in her slipstream through Beaumont's public education system, there was an implicit - and sometimes explicit - assumption that I had a lot to live up to in terms of scholarship, diligence, integrity and the pursuit of excellence. Small wonder that she devoted her own life to education. She was fierce in her love for her sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren. Her home was wondrous, not only for the beautiful things she filled it with, but for the way she shared it with others. Christmases were extraordinary, rivaling those of her own mother over the decades. I still have the family recipes that Thelma carefully preserved to pass down the generations. More important still were the values she sought to make part of her legacy on earth; a dedication to integrity, honesty and principle. I am so grateful for the standards she set, and for the home, childhood and mother - we were privileged to share. Bless you, sister, eternally. And blessings to the family members who follow in her footsteps.

Thelma was beautiful person inside and out: kind, friendly, studious, excellent dancer. We were friends in high school and at Lamar. We both taught in Nederland early in our careers. I am terribly sad at her loss but thankful to have been her friend.

i KNEW THELMA FROM BEAUMONT ISD WHERE SHE SERVED ON THE INSURANCE COMMITTEE FOR MANY YEARS. SHE WAS A VERY CARING PERSON THAT WAS ALWAYS LOOKING OUT FOR THE BEST INTEREST OF BISD EMPLOYEES. SHE SERVED BISD WELL. WE WILL MISS HER AND PRAY FOR HER FAMILY.

When I went to French High School, my classmates and I would on occasion go to Thelma's wonderful house on Lucas Drive for our get-togethers. Her lovely mother would be there and her brother, Gary, later to be a classmate of my brother Stephen Gary Marshall at French, could be seen skirting here and there around the house. As we went through school, we watched Thelma excelling in whatever she did--her studies, her participation in plays & school club groups, cheerleader, homecoming queen, a superb dancer in Miss Judith Sproule's School of Dance (especially marveling at her adagio performances). But the qualities that I noticed through the years of our youth and was so impressed with were Thelma's humility in her many achievements, her never-wavering kindness towards us all, and her unusual quality of being nonjudgmental of others. We will miss you, Thelma. God speed you on your journey. With love, Cynthia

I was a student at Judith Sproule's. Joni Kay and I were classmates there. I would be in awe as I watched Thelma whip out those fouette's on recital. She was a beautiful person inside and out. My deep condolences to all.
