Gordon Gates

November 4, 1951 - September 14, 2019

Gordon Earl Gates, 67, of Kountze, died Saturday, September 14, 2019. He was born on November 4, 1951, in Trinity, to Nina Evoyne Stovall Gates and Elvis Houston Gates.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Debbie Gates; children, Kristie Gates of Kountze; Jodi Horton and her husband, Chris, of Hallsville; and Travis John Houston Gates and his wife, Hallie, of Kountze; grandchildren, Cole Horton, Jake Horton, and Wyatt Gates; mother, Nina Evoyne Gates; siblings, Jerry Gates and his wife, Debra, of Kountze; Connie Sue Gates of Houston; and Jeannie Gates of Louisiana; brother-in-law, Mike Winters; and sister-in-law, Connie Dimitri and her husband, Jimmy, all of Texas City; and a host of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father; sister, Janice Friday; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Betty and John Winters.

Gordon worked for British Petroleum/AMOCO (BP) until his retirement, then worked as a consultant for several companies until his death. Although he was a modest man, Gordon possessed a wealth of knowledge and was an expert in research and development in the oil and gas industry. A dreamer at heart, Gordon spent many of his days working on his blueberry farm and satsuma grove. He poured his love, time, and effort into the farm with hopes of providing for many future generations.

Gordon was a man who loved generously and served God faithfully. His hands were scarred from a life of hard work and determination to provide a wonderful and adventurous life for his wife and children.

Gordon leaves behind a considerable legacy to both his children and grandchildren. He was a humble man, always willing to help those who needed it. He diligently served his church and community.

Most of all Gordon cherished his grandsons, Cole, Jake, and Wyatt.

We want to thank the Neruo Intensive Care Unit, specifically Bob and Jamie, at St. Elizabeth, as well as the surgeons and nurses that provided a phenomenal level of care for Gordon and his family. We are also grateful to our friends and family for each prayer and act of kindness that has been shown to us through this trial.

A gathering of Gordon’s family and friends will begin at 9:00 a.m., with his funeral service at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 17, 2019, at First Baptist Church, 100 Monroe Street, Kountze, under the direction of Broussard’s, Silsbee. His interment will follow at Old Hardin Cemetery, Kountze.

I worked with Gordon at BP and loved him as a kind and generous man. He brought me a blueberry bush for my garden. I babied it but unfortunately it didn’t survive my efforts to keep it alive. I will miss Gordon. My prayers are with the family.
