James Olan Webb

August 26, 1942 - January 08, 2021

James Webb

James Olan Webb, 78, of Silsbee, died Friday, January 8, 2021. He was born on August 26, 1942, in San Augustine, to Dorthey King Webb and James Conley Webb. Olan was raised in Central Gardens, Nederland, Texas. He graduated from Nederland High School in 1960 and enrolled in Lamar University that fall.

On the first day of his freshman English class, he met the love of his life, Sherry Ann Hicks. They married July 11, 1964 and began their beautiful life together. Olan worked as an accountant in Houston and Waco before he and Sherry settled in Beaumont in 1968. Not long after they returned, he took a job with Houston Chemical as an accountant. His thirty years of work took him and his family from Beaumont, Texas, to New Martinsville, West Virginia, to Portland, Texas and finally back to Silsbee, Texas, in 1983. In every place they lived, Olan and his family became involved in the local church and made lifelong friends. Olan retired from Oxy in 2002. Not ready to be done working, he took a job as Business Administrator at Calvary Baptist Church in Beaumont, from which he retired for good in 2007.

In 2002, Olan was appointed to the Lower Neches Valley Authority Water Board, where he served faithfully for sixteen years. He enjoyed learning about water rights and being involved in projects such as the Saltwater Barrier Project in the Neches River. His favorite days were spent at Cedar Ridge Farm, where he never lacked for things to do. He enjoyed mowing, fishing, and entertaining grandchildren. He never stopped learning. He taught himself how to add “smart” features to his house and watched endless YouTube videos for both help and enjoyment.

Olan’s life was a display of love for and service to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He loved people and cherished the relationships he built with them. He was a “fixer” of many things...from broken hearts to broken cars and everything in between. He often reminded his children and grandchildren to “call people by their name, look them in the eye, and ask people about themselves because, after all, it’s their favorite subject.” He went about doing good in a quiet manner, never drawing attention to himself, and only ever wanting God to get the glory. Olan served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and faithful member of his beloved Calvary Baptist Church in Beaumont, Texas. He was an easy person to love, and his life preached far and wide. A treasured friend to many, he will be missed by all who had the privilege to know him.

Olan is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Sherry Ann Hicks Webb; sister, Ann Webb Brown, and her husband, Gehrig Brown, of Silsbee; son, James Kirby Webb, and his wife, Debra Delp Webb, of Rockwall; daughter, Amy Lynn Webb Fuller, of Silsbee; seven beautiful grandchildren, James Christopher Webb and wife, Brenna Hurst Webb; Sarah Leeann Webb and fiancé, Tanner Kelly; Conally Marie Webb; Whitney Claire Webb; Carson Mattox Fuller; Landon Michael Fuller; and Campbell Gage Fuller, all of whom affectionately called him “Doo Dah”, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A gathering of Mr. Webb’s family and friends will begin at 9:00 a.m. with his funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 16, 2021, at Calvary Baptist Church, 3650 Dowlen Road, Beaumont. His interment will follow at Hardin Memorial Park, Silsbee, under the direction of Broussard’s, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee. Calvary Baptist Church Beaumont has requested all family and friends attending Mr. Webb’s service to please wear a mask at all times.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center, 1515 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, Texas 77030 or Calvary Baptist Church Beyond, 3550 Dolwen Road, Suite A, Beaumont, Texas 77706.

I remember when I first came to the States, Mr. Webb helped teach my Pre-K Sunday School class. He was always so kind, thoughtful, and asking my parents how I was doing in college. I never understood why he cared so much because genuine kindness like that is rare and was so foreign to me. From helping a foreign 3 year old color the days of creation to congratulating me on an achievement I didn’t even know about, he always made me feel like I mattered and emulated Christ’s love. He was a blessing and inspiration to us all. Our prayers are with your family as he is greatly missed.
