June Louise Guilbeau Strait

August 14, 1928 - July 30, 2020

June Louise Guilbeau Strait, 91, of Beaumont, died Thursday, July 30, 2020, at Christus Southeast Texas-St. Elizabeth, Beaumont.

Ode to June by William Strait

Listen to my children that you might know

Of the early life of June Guilbeau:

On the fourteenth of August in 1928,

Opelousas was the city and Louisiana the state.

Born in her house at Tennis and Court-

A precursor of interest in her favorite sport?

So “Lula” and Clayton anxiously waited for her to arrive:

Their third of what would be five.

Wray and Inez were one and two, and June was number three;

While Jeanne and C.J. followed to complete the family.

After Parish schools came two years at Grand Coteau,

Then back home to A.I.C.*, where she hustled at basketball and stayed on the go.

And let’s not forget that as Homecoming Queen

She charmed the crowds in parade and ceremony.

After a year at LSU it was easy to see

That working for her dad wouldn’t be bad at the Guilbeau Oil Company.

Then from Pharr across Texas her husband to be

Came to woo her and win her, ‘though engaged she might be!

Then to change her name from Guilbeau to Strait,

And evermore be his wife and soul-mate!

Survivors include her husband, Bill Strait; son, BD Strait and his wife, Lynn, of Pinewood; daughters, Billie Driscoll and her husband, Rick, of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Beverly Aulbaugh and her husband, Jack, of Beaumont; grandchildren, Cody Strait, Katie Mitchell, Kelly Smith, John Ryan Driscoll, Carly Holley, Carter Clarke, and Jack Aulbaugh; and great-grandchildren, Asher, Steele, and Ford Strait, Brook and Emma Holley, and Andon Mitchell.

A memorial service for Mrs. Strait will be 3:00 p.m., Saturday, August 15, 2020, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 3430 Harrison Avenue, Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.  Her cremation arrangements werehandled through Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont.

A terrific lady , Mom of my best friend has passed... Mrs. Strait was a treasure to say the least.. In high school I spent many afternoons after school at the Strait home. Mrs. Strait was always saying that I needed to stay for dinner because she thought I was to thin. She was a great cook and I always appreciated her kindness and hospitality.. She was a good athlete also.. I taught her and Mr. Strait Tennis at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center .. She had a good doubles game. She was always upbeat and nice. She, I believe lived a fulfilled life. Raised 3 kids who are top notch and are good people.. I know the angels in heaven rejoiced welcoming her there. She is one of the last of “The Greatest Generation “. A tough generation that made America great. She will be missed by all. God Bless..

Oh what a wonderful ODE to Mrs. Strait! She has been in my life for 58 years and I will miss her wonderful voice saying JANIE!!!! whenever I would see her. She was a wonderful person and she will be missed terribly. I know you are having a great reunion with my mom(Doris) and dad(Freddie) Clark in Heaven AND I'm sure you and Jan Bolton are already on the courts playing your best game ever! Much love to the rest of the Strait family as they learn to navigate without their mom at the helm. Hugs to you Mr. Strait on a life well loved with her and hope you find comfort in the thoughts that she is waiting for you! Love you Jan Clark Wallace

Mr. Strait - so sorry to hear about your wife. You two were special and we always enjoyed visiting with you when you came in the office. Prayers for you and your family.

Lynn Strait

I thank God for giving me June as a mother-in-law. She was a great example of how to be a wife, mother, and mother-in-law. I count myself blessed to be apart of this great family. We miss you dearly already., but know we will see you again.

Katie Strait Mitchell

I can’t begin to express how truly blessed our family is to have such an amazing Grandmother like you. I was just thinking the other day how you used to bathe me in your sink, swing me on the swing, brush my long blonde hair, drive me and Cody to Toys R Us, take us to the skating rink so Cody and I could win a coke for being the fastest skater,, spend every Christmas holiday week with you growing up, and admiring the way you cooked. Grenny the memories can go on and on. I’m so thankful that God chose you to be my Grenny and to always have you just a drive or a phone call away when I needed something.. Everyone you came into contact with admired you and always talked highly of you. I always felt so proud that you were my Grenny. It wasn’t too long ago that we were both laughing and sharing funny memories. Our favorite that we discussed often was when you say something and that’s it, period, end of discussion. You had this saying when I was little that you said, “Kate when I say it’s black it’s black.” And one day when I was young I decided to tell you that I changed the color.” I can still her your voice saying my name, “Kate” or “Katie”, which you rarely called me unless I was in trouble. My heart is sad that your gone and to be honest it doesn’t even feel real. I don’t think reality has set in quite yet. I wish I could have one last hug and one last kiss to say goodbye and just one last time to hear your Cajun accent, which I absolutely loved!. I love you Grenny. I don’t know if heaven allows request, but if so, I would like to make a special request to have you along with others greeting me as I arrive to Heaven one day. You will truly be missed but the memories will carry on! I will forever hear you in my heart saying “I love you darling” Your Granddaughter, Kate Strait

It is hard to believe we are without our Granny now. She always lit up any room she walked into, deeply loved those dear to her, and valued what’s important - family and friends. When we had our daughter, Brooke, Granny always referred to Brooke as her “pumpkin.” I will miss hearing her say that. I am so grateful my second daughter, Emma, got the opportunity to meet Granny. It brought Granny so much joy to meet her great grandchildren and I am so happy I was fortunate enough to witness that. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, I looked forward to getting together with our family and Granny’s presence brought light and laughter every year at these family gatherings. I have the fondest memories with her that I will keep in my heart forever - family vacations in New Braunfels, shopping, Mazzio’s lunch dates, pedicures, and my favorite is all of the times she picked me up from school when I was in middle school. We will miss her so much. It is tough to lose such a wonderful woman and grandmother, but we rest assured she is in a better place with our Lord in Heaven and praise Him that she was a part of our family. “Weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” Psalm 30:5 Love always, Carly, Cory, Brooke (Granny’s “pumpkin”), and Emma

Mary Margaret Blanchette Miller

Mr. Strait, my forever buddy, Bev, BD and Billy June. Junnie was such a big part of my family. She loved us like we were her own. My grandchildren loved there “crazy lady”with their whole heart. There are so many memories that I will cherish forever. I will miss Junnie . I do know she and Mom, Alice and Pete and Mama Hornsby are having the best time talking about everything possible. My heart is sad because I didn’t get to tell her how much I loved her. I think Junie knew my love for her and her beautiful family is forever. I love you and I pray that will all find peace in knowing Junie is in a much better place. I love you. Mary Margaret

FAITH F CAIN

Aunt June was such a special lady. I will miss her laugh and her great sense of humor. She was very hospitable to Larry and I when we lived near by and I always felt that I was welcome at any gathering she was a part of . She was the last of the Clayton Guilbeau clan and will be truly missed. I want to give my sincere condolences to Uncle Bill, BD, Bev and Billie. You are all in my prayers. Aunt June is now with her parents and siblings in a better place and I can just hear her laugh with joy!

Marcia Shriver

I always liked June. She was a sweet little lady with a big heart. I know she loved tennis at one time in her life and being a fellow tennis player I remember seeing her on the tennis court. She was a great cook! On occasion being at Lynn and BD's house, she and Bill would bring food. I loved her "potato delish"! That's one recipe I had to have. The last time we had a conversation, catching up with her was easy. She was always friendly to me and so easy to talk to. She was loved by all and will be truly missed. I'm sad she's gone but know she's in a better place. Hopefully cooking up a batch of "potato delish"!

Maureen Wexler

Uncle Bill, I love the poem you wrote for Aunt June! My prayers are with you and Bev, BD, Billie June, and all of the other family members and friends. I always think of Aunt June as being so much fun! She would light up the room with her personality! My mom (Inez) always looked forward to Aunt June and Uncle Bill's visits. They helped her with the many things around the house that she couldn't tend to... lots of clearing out and cleaning! What servant's hearts they had!! I will miss the phone calls and visits! May God's Love and Peace surround her and her family!

Ron and Pat Wesbrooks

Our prayers and sincere sympathy to this wonderful family. We knew June through tennis, and always enjoyed her cheerful spirit. She also had the cutest legs in town! Bill’s poem was a beautiful tribute.

Jack Aulbaugh

Granny was an amazing grandmother and an incredible cook. And I have no doubt she is already hitting the courts in heaven. I love you Granny and will miss you very much. - Your Grandson, Jack Conlee

Beth Guilbeau Tillotson

Uncle Bill, BD, Billie June and Bev - I'm so sorry to hear that we've lost Aunt June. I have such fond memories of her and will always remember her extraordinary energy and great sense of humor. I know there's a pot of the special family-recipe crawfish bisque brewing in heaven to welcome her - along with a cold beer. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Sending much love to you all.

Carter Clarke

I don't even know where to start on how much Granny meant to me and the rest of our family. There are so many memories that I will never forget and will always hold close. I will never forget her smile, laugh or her hugs. I'll miss dancing in the kitchen with her while she cooked gumbo. I'll especially miss the times she took care of me when I was sick and the times she picked me up from middle school while we wailed to George Strait on the ride home. There is a special place in my heart where I will hold these memories close and share them whenever I can. I could not ask for a better grandmother. May you rest in peace, Granny. I can't wait to see you again one day. Love you!

Dan Fontenot

Uncle Bill, I am sorry for your loss. I did enjoy your poem, it was very thoughtful. My thoughts and prayers are with you, B.D., Bev and Billy June. Aunt June always would greet you with a smile and had a great sense of humor. She is in a better place. She will be missed by all.

Ann Brown

When I think of June the first word that come to mind is Loyal! Loyal wife, mother and grandmother. Everyone that knew her would surely agree she endeavored tirelessly to enrich her family’s happiness. With that sweet southern Louisiana accent, she always had a warm greeting that made you feel special. She will be missed but will live on through the lives of those she touched so deeply.

Cody Strait

Granny, I will miss you very much. I enjoy everyday I ever spent with you as A child and as an adult. I cherish all the memories we made together, when my parents would drop me off at your house and we would spend the day together running errands, going to lunch, going to baseball card stores, toy stores, hot cakes in the morning. I miss that only you and me liked the licorice jelly beans that you always had a jar of them. One thing that I will not have to miss is your cooking bc you taught my mom who taught my wife and I get to continue to eat the meals you cooked for us. You truly lived the way live should be lived. I love you. Your Grandson Cody

Ronnie Moses

June you were a very special & loving person, I got to know June & Bill through Trinity UMC and the Trinity Army mission work group.....Being as Bill worked and drew up the wheelchair ramp plans for Trinity Army, there were times June would go with Bill & myself to measure and set up plans for jobs..... Also as Bill would have the ramp drawings nearly finished, he would ask me to come over & check out his work.....this was a Treat for me, for not only did I get to check the work of this guy that was a professional, June was always around the house and at times she had cake or pie......what a Treat..... Usually where you would see Bill, June was also with him...........Usually after Trinity Army finished a job we would go for lunch as a group, Bill made sure to call June to have lunch with us..... June was a delightful and Loving person, I'm sure God has a special place in Heaven for her............May she rest in Peace...... Our Prayers & Blessings go out to Bill and the Family....... Ronnie Moses....Trinity Army.......

I'm so very sorry to hear about Mrs. Straits passing. I have a very fond memory of June Strait that goes all the way back to when I was a child as a Cub Scout. She was a great den mom. We as kids were very blessed to have the parents we had and grow up in a time when the neighborhoods were as they were. I'm also thankful for her kind participation when we as kids were in Caldwood Elementary school. Rip Mrs. Strait. I'm sure the Lord is watching over you now..

Katy Hambright

Uncle Bill, BD, Billie, and Bec, Our thoughts and pryers are with you during this time. I have fond memories of Aunt June laughing, smiling and always ready to have a good time. She was one of the most energetic people I knew, always having a project or sport she was participating in., She was forever ready to lend a helping hand..

Gail Guilbeau Leger

Dear Uncle Bill, BD, Billie and Beverly Aunt June was such a beautiful woman and aunt. She had a way of making you feel positive about any situation and especially with our dad. I know the Guilbeaus are having a wonderful time together. A good game of bouree and tennis on the TV. Remember all the good times and know that we are all here for all of you. MUCH LOVE...Gail

Kelly Driscoll

No one quite left an impression like Granny; with her infectious energy, bright eyes and cute smile. Her quick wit and humor kept us grandchildren on our toes and always laughing. Granny had the amazing ability to make you feel loved, no matter if you were across the table or thousands of miles away. She taught me the value of family, the true meaning of hospitality, the importance of friendship, the beauty salon, and defensive driving. There’s no one I’d rather watch old movies with, hang in the kitchen with, or get tennis lessons from.. and know she’ll be here in spirit cheering us all along for years to come. Granny - you are so loved and I’ll never forget the joyous memories we’ve shared. Your legacy will continue to live on! Love Always, Kelly

John Driscoll

Dear Granny, I truly loved getting to know you, hearing your stories, and spending time with you. You were such a joy to everyone you were around, and always brought happiness with you wherever you went. I have so many vibrant memories with you, and often think of the times when we would just hang out in the back yard of your house on a hot Beaumont day, catching up about who knows what, watering the plants barefoot sometimes dousing them in water with the hose soaker to keep cool. We would also have so much fun going to the grocery store, browsing the aisles looking for the ingredients for the next delicious meal you had in mind for the family. I still make your corn casserole to this day, as it has become a staple for bringing to a friend’s house or making for family, and I always proudly say “this is Granny’s secret recipe”. I really enjoyed our time spent together cheering on sports teams and will always remember how intensely passionate you would get during football games. I am so glad you were able to meet my wife Hannah and welcome her to the family as one of your own. She loved getting to know you as well, and always looked forward to our trips to visit. I hope you are enjoying your endless supply of Cherry Strudel “end pieces” in Heaven, just like you did during those early New Braunfels mornings. Love you so much, John Ryan, JR, “The Dog”

Tom Robichau

Mr. Strait, B.D., Billie, Bev and all your kids and grandkids, I'm so sorry to just hear of June's passing. Growing up in Maplewood was magical, in large part due to the fact that we all had a second Mom in June Strait. Being so close in age to B.D. and Billie, and living so near to you all, I was very fortunate to be able to spend a lot of time with you all. June had the most perfect Cajun accent, a funny, infectious personality, and a desire to see all of us succeed. She called me "Robe" just like my friends did and rooted almost as hard for me playing baseball as she did for B D She was inspirational and the she will be truly missed. Love you guys. Robe.
