Lance L. Long
Lance L Long, 58, of Lumberton, Texas, went to be with the Lord on January 9, 2021. He was born on October 8, 1962 in Houston, Texas to James William Long and Connie Jeanene (Surratt) Long. Lance was raised in Kingsville and Lumberton, Texas. He graduated from Lumberton High School in 1981, earned his bachelor’s degree from Lamar University, and his master’s degree from Stephen F. Austin.
Lance, a longtime resident of Lumberton, served as a teacher and assistant principal for over 30 years. Coach Long, as he was known by many, was also a coach, mentor, and friend to all who knew him. Coach Long was repeatedly recognized for his accomplishments as an educator and administrator, but all who knew him believed that his greatest impact was in helping to shape the lives of others.
Lance tirelessly strived to lift up those around him and be a positive role model for his students. It has been said that what we leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments but what is woven into the lives of others. Lance exemplified those words and left an impact on the community that will be felt for perhaps generations.
Lance was a devoted grandfather. Papa, as he was known to his granddaughters, treasured every moment spent with the girls. Although the grandchildren are loved beyond measure, it is safe to say that no one will ever love them the way Papa did.
Survivors include his wife, Corina Long of Lumberton, Texas; children, Janie Long and her fiancé, Steven DeHart, of Lumberton; Will Long of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Cheyenne Wilson of Beaumont, Texas; Samantha Wilson and her fiancé, Tab Olson, of Pearland, Texas; his beautiful granddaughters, Ella Jane Mills, Zoey Marie DeHart, and Andi Grace DeHart; sister, Kelli Marriott, and her husband, Frank, of College Station; brother, Lex Long, and his wife, Kim, of Lumberton; mother, Jeanene Long of Lumberton; sister-in-law, Laura Witt and her husband, Bryan, of Round Rock, Texas; and his six nieces and nephews. Lance is preceded in death by his father, James William Long.
A gathering of Mr. Long’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Saturday, January 16, 2021, at Broussard’s Mortuary, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee. His funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday January 17, 2021, at Broussard’s. Mr. Long’s committal will be held at Broussard’s Crematorium.

We remember Lance as being kind & friendly to our oldest son, Jason, who was much younger than Lance when we first moved next door to his family on Ginger Lane. Many years later he was the Principal at Lumberton Prinary that our grandsons' were attending. He was still kind, friendly & an excellent mentor for children. There aren’t enough words to express how much we all loved and respected Lance. He was always so caring, supportive, helpful, selfless, and always had the teachers’ backs. I will forever remember him as a great man and friend who didn’t hesitate to do anything to help those he worked with and cared about!! I will also never forget how he immediately get on that shuttle bus after seeing Sophie Grace with huge crocodile tears running down her face and her telling him that a boy called her “buck toothâ€. She was so hurt which hurt his heart. He found that boy, gave him a talking to, and made him apologize to her immediately. I remember Soph giving him a big hug! He was a knight in shining armor that day for my sweet baby whose heart was so crushed! He loved my kids- all of our kids and never hesitated to ask about them or give his time to ask how life was going in our worlds of craziness and overload! He never ever hesitated to care about our feelings and how we were doing on a daily basis. My kids always loved him especially Sophie. There was never a doubt in my mind how much he loved you Corina!! No doubt of his love and admiration when he spoke of you which was all of the time. I will only forever have great, fun, and respectful memories of him. Always know that he left an outstanding legacy for me and many of us that had the honor and blessing of working for him and with him. I am beyond sorry for his passing, the loss, and pain that you are all going through. The kids and I have prayed nightly for y’all as we pray for so many people in loss and pain at this time. We will continue to do so.

There simply are no words to adequately describe such a wonderful man. He defined the word gentleman in every way. I had the pleasure of working with him for 18 years and was among the many who admired and respected him. It is not an easy task to earn the respect and admiration he developed from his teachers, students, parents, and friends. His cup was filled on a daily basis by helping others.. When my home flooded with over 5 ft. of water, he was the first person on the scene. He worked tirelessly mucking and moving my furniture out for 2 long days with a smile and encouraging words.. I kidded him that this surely wasn’t on his job description.. His daily routine of checking in on his teachers and students allowed the best possible learning environment . Everyone flourished because of him.. I shall cherish the many years I was fortunate to have known him.
Ill forever be sorry that this full circle came too late. What an extroidinary man…an invaluable educator. The coach who meant something more to everyone. Thank you for your service and kindness. Kind eyes and integrity that was character and quality. Thank you for everything you did for my children: Joe Williams, Aiden Atchley, and Bailey Atchley. I made a life for us that you’d have been happy about. Thank you so much.
