Margaret J. Canant

March 8, 1926 - March 31, 2020

Margaret Jane Francis Canant, 94, of Beaumont, died Tuesday, March 31, 2020. She lost the love of her life, Douglas, two months earlier. She was born March 28, 1926 in Beaumont to Lottie and Robert Francis.

Margaret was a lifelong Beaumont resident, educated in Beaumont schools, and graduated from Beaumont High School. She went to work at the ABC store in Beaumont and attended Lamar University in 1947. Margaret married Douglas Sanders Canant, her loving spouse of 72 years, in Poteet, where her brother was a pastor. They had 5 children and then she returned to Lamar and earned her teaching degree.

Margaret taught her entire teaching career at Lucas Elementary, teaching the first and second grades. She loved God, her husband, her children and their families, her husband’s family, her friends and her kid’s friends. She loved her friend’s families and their kids! She loved people! And people loved her. Margaret enjoyed quilting, gardening, traveling, teaching Sunday school and MYF at North End, later Wesley United Methodist Church, where she was an active member for many years.

She is survived by daughters Nancy and her husband, Ron; Martha and her husband, Lloyd; Carol and her husband John; Ginny; son Doug, Jr. and his wife Debbie; and her ever attentive niece, Kathleen, eleven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her mother and father, her husband, her sister Polly, and her brother J.D.

A memorial service for Mrs. Canant is to be announced. A family committal will be held at Broussard’s Crematorium under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.

She was my 1st grade teacher at Lucas Elementary...I remember she taught me to tell time....and I remember she had a paddle that was a ping pong paddle....luckily,, I was not on the receiving end of that!! Sorry for your loss...
