Michael Westbrook

February 6, 1966 - March 26, 2020

Michael “Mike” Scott Westbrook, 54, of Lumberton, died Thursday, March 26, 2020.  He was born on February 6, 1966, in Port Arthur, to Clara Smith Westbrook and Ronnie Mills Westbrook.

Mike Westbrook taught for thirty years in southeast Texas. His career as a band director carried him to the Evadale, Port Arthur, Lumberton, Port Neches-Groves and the Hardin-Jefferson school districts. Twenty-eight of these years were as a band director. He served two of his ten years in Lumberton as an Assistant Principal.

His bands achieved great success in each district in which he taught. The programs grew in quality and numbers under his guidance. His love for students was evident and their love for him was evident in the way they performed. Mike’s goal was for them to constantly improve and to always be the best they can be. They always carried themselves well and represented their schools in a first-class manner. He expected nothing less from them than he expected from himself.

Mike was a loving family man and friend. Those who knew him were blessed to have him be a part of their lives. He was always the first one to offer help, a smile, or an encouraging word. His laughter was contagious, and his smile was infectious. While we will all miss him greatly, we can all remember him and know that our lives are better because of him. Heaven has gained a new first chair trumpet and we will all see you soon.

Mike was well respected among his peers and was always willing to help when asked. He was a regular volunteer at TMEA activities at the local, area, and state levels. His contributions to music education are many and he will be missed greatly by all those who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Westbrook; children, Mollie Westbrook, Aaron Westbrook, and Ella Westbrook; father, Ronnie Westbrook of Nederland; siblings, Amy Nelson and her husband, Steven, of Nederland; and Stephen Westbrook and his wife, Ronna, of Jasper; mother-in-law, Barbara Cummings of Lumberton; bother-in-law, Kevin Cummings and his wife, Cindy, of Kountze; and nieces and nephews, Sarah Nelson, Robyn Nelson, Kevin Nelson, Tristan Westbrook, and Koby Cummings.  He is preceded in death by his mother, Clara Westbrook; and grandparents, Eula and Ernest Smith, and Jewel and Carl Westbrook.

A gathering of Mr. Westbrook’s family and friends will begin at 10:00 a.m., with his memorial service at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 18, 2020, at One City Church, 2350 Eastex Fwy, Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard’s, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee. There are no words to say that can ease the impact of your loss. My wife and I are thinking of your family, and are bowing our heads in humble, quiet deference to the Creator of us all, listening for what it is that He wants you, us, and others to learn from this profound loss. No one can understand the loss of this beautiful soul but Him, and no one can carry you as a swaddled baby through the muck of the roads that lie ahead but him. In these coming moments, hours, days, weeks, months, years, and decade ahead, may you feel your feet rise above the ground and feel a weightlessness about you that says to you distinctly without hesitation; “I am here. I’ve got you. WE can do this together, my love.” Our heartfelt condolences, Kip and Shannon McFarlin

Mike always knew how to make you laugh. He always took it upon himself to make me personally feel important and special at a time in my life when I didn't. I am blessed to have known him and call him a mental and friend. Much love Mike. Go play with God's symphony now.

Ronnie and family, I am deeply sorry about Michael, what a great guy! Reflecting the other day about the years growing up in school and playing baseball He always had a smile or a laugh and just so easy going. I know the students raved about him and loved him. There are always people who impact our lives for the rest of our lives, I really believe Michael was one of those people to his students and his friends, family and coworkers.. I will continue to lift your family before the Lord and take comfort in knowing you raised him right and because you did what God called you to do as a christian and a parent he is in paradise today. You are a good man Ronnie, I saw it as a kid growing up on the baseball fields. Strength to you and your family... Gal. 2: 20

Mike and I have been friends and colleagues for what seems like forever. Mike was older and Amy and I were lab partners in chemistry at NHS. When I went to Lamar and basically lived in the music department, Mike and I were in some recitals and classes together. He was always the funny guy and cracking jokes. After Lamar, Mike and I would always run into each other at TMEA. Mike strives to be a top notch musician. He participated in all of the music activities he could. He lived what he loved! He taught his students to love the music not because it can make you famous or wealthy but because it makes you a better human! Thanks Mike!
