Samuel Jerome Serio, Jr.

October 2, 1949 - July 29, 2020

Samuel Jerome Serio, Jr., 70, of Beaumont, died Wednesday, July 29, 2020, at Christus Southeast Texas-St. Elizabeth, Beaumont. He was born on October 2, 1949, to Angie Giglio Serio and Sam J. Serio, Sr., in Beaumont. Sam received a bachelor’s degree from Lamar University in Marketing. He was superintendent of maintenance at the Port of Beaumont for 30 years before his retirement in 2010. He was a member of the Sabine District Transportation Club, YMBL, was a former board member of Boy’s Haven, and served on the Jefferson County Appraisal Board.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lynne Serio; daughter, Amy Lynne Bhatia of Dallas; son, Travis Cook and his wife, Wendy, of Plano; sisters, Susan Russell and Stephanie Roberts her husband, Robert; and brother, Danny Serio and his wife, Judy, all of Beaumont; grandchildren, Liam Bhatia, Owen Bhatia, Calleigh Cook, Evie Bhatia, and Calder Cook; and nieces and nephews: Anne East, Taylor Russell and his wife, Stephanie; Michael Roberts; Trent Roberts; and Anthony Serio.

He is preceded in death by his beloved mother and father, and his in-laws Evelyn E. Young and Joe E. Young.

Sam Serio loved life and was strong in his faith. He knew that his life was blessed, and he knew that these blessings came from God. Knowing that we are not in control, but all things came from the Father.

The greatest of these blessings were his family and friends. Cherishing time spent with them. He was the anchor, the rock, that they all knew they could count on whether it was fixing a toilet, dead battery, or giving money to help out, he did it without being asked, just for the joy of doing unto others.

He was truly selfless, thinking of others before himself. Even when facing a life-threatening illness, he was concerned about the demands his illness would place on his family and of the emotional toll on them.

The last couple of years brought him great joy at his beach house. Sitting on the deck, visiting with friends, riding in the golf cart with his wife and beloved Ginger. He told his wife he did not deserve to be so happy. She did not agree. Such a good man deserves all this and more. The greatest being the love we all had for him.

He loved his wife unconditionally even when she got feisty with him. Protected and cherished her. We are all better people loving and being loved by Sam J. Serio, Jr., and can’t wait to be with him again someday in Heaven.

A video recording of Mr. Serio’s Memorial Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 5, 2020, in the following link https://youtu.be/f5Z1alNGulI.

His cremation arrangements will be handled through Broussard’s Crematorium, under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Humane Society of Southeast Texas, P.O. Box 1629, Beaumont, Texas 77704.

I had the privilege of working with Sam in the late ‘80’s on Formula One boat races when I was with the Civic Center and Sam was with the Port. Sam was always a friend, as well as collaborator and project facilitator. When we both retired and would run into each other across town, it was a joyous reunion. I always felt happier after a chance encounter with Sam. I shall miss him. RIP my friend.
