Alzada Stansbury
Alzada Bertrand Stansbury, 85 of Fannett passed away on January 24, 2021 at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital.
Born December 7, 1935 to Cora Mae Simmons and Elliot Bertrand, Alzada lived her entire life in Fannett.
Alzada was a devoted Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt, loyal friend, and Historian. She was affectionately referred to by many as the Fannett Chamber of Commerce. If you had a question about the Fannett, Hamshire or Labelle communities or Jefferson County, she could not only answer your question, but she could also provide you with supporting documentation. The Beaumont Enterprise did a feature story on her years ago about the vast amount of historical data, pictures. Etc that she had on the area.
She graduated from Fannett High School where she was the Salutatorian of her class. She married the love of her life, Curnes Stansbury on December 24th, 1953. The Mom of 3 children, she was a devoted stay at home Mom. She was active in their school activities, serving as an officer in the Band club and PTA. She could also be found running the football concession stand for many years.
Once her youngest child was a Junior in High School, she returned to work. She spent 5 years as the Office Manager at Culligan Water Conditioning Company in Beaumont followed by 3 years at United Way of Beaumont as an Accounting Assistant.
She was also an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fannett where she served in numerous capacities throughout the years.
33 years ago, she & Jeanette Kunefke took over the Hamshire-Fannett All Schools reunion from Margaret East and others. She devoted much of her time during these years organizing, maintaining records of all graduates, etc.
Most recently, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, cooking and her weekly trips to restock her birthday and anniversary cards. She never missed a birthday or anniversary for her friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her Mother, Cora Mae Hargraves Bertrand Simmons, her Father, Elliott Bertrand, Stepfather, William “Bill” Simmons, Sister, Beverly Cast. Stepbrothers, Calvin Bourque, Stepsister, Delta Bourque, Son in Law, Dennis Keene, Grandson, Brandon Preston and Grand Canine daughter, Maggie Keene.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Curnes Stansbury, Daughter, Tina Dunham of Fannett, Son and Daughter in law, Tommy & Jackie Stansbury of Santa Anna, Tricia Keene of Fannett, Brothers, Ivan Dale Bertrand and wife Barbara of Beaumont and Lee Bertrand and wife Sally of Fannett, Grandchildren, Kevin Heckaman and wife Michelle of Liberty, Heather Heckaman of Hamshire, Cody Heckaman and wife Jessica of Fannett, Grand Canine Sons Duval Keene and Oui Oui Dunham of Fannett and numerous Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews.
Memorial Contributions for Mrs. Stansbury may be made to St Mary’s Catholic Church, 9894 Gilbert Road, Fannett Texas 77705.
A gathering of Mrs. Stansbury’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with her Rosary recited at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, January 28, 2021, at Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 29, 2021, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 9894 Gilbert Road, Fannett, with her interment to follow at Landrum Cemetery, Fannett.

A wonderful lady and valuable gem to our world. Now she is getting reunited with all those kinfolk, and friends of the community, that she has been keeping a history record account. Her life has spanned more than 80 years so that is a lot of history which she experienced and enjoyed. I know she is enjoying seeing her mama, sister and grandson, and most of all meeting Jesus face to face. Alzada was a great lady and a cousin by marriage. She and Curnice (Curnie as she called him) were a wonderful couple. She was so proud of her family and very devoted to her duties as the unofficial 'historian and record keeper" of the Fannett school and communtiy and the annual reunion. Pat and I visited her and Curnice many times over the years and always enjoyed our visits with them so much.. Her gumbo and peanut brittle were the very best. The bible says "to absent from the body is to be present with the Lord". Alzada is reunited in heaven with Aunt Cora Mae, her grandson and a large host of relatives and friends. Gog bless her family and give them his comfort!

Alzada was very special to me. I could sit and talk with her for hours. She loved sharing the history of all those who lived in Fannett. She attended my sons funeral on January 9th, walked up to me in her walker, and gave ma a card for masses for my son and hugged me. I will never forget the tears in her eyes. Alzada and I became close friends and talked to each other everyday, after we built our home by her Mothers home. She was a good friend, and I will miss our daily talks. She was one of the nicest ladies, I have ever met. Rest In Peace Alzada!

I will always remember Alzada telling about the time she went to check on Aunt Cora Mae after she had her bilateral knee replacements. She couldn’t find her in the house and it kinda scared her. Aunt Cora Mae was outside in her car with the engine running. Alzada asked her what she was doing and she said, “I’m practicing for when the doctor says I can drive!†I’ve told that story many times over the years.

My dad was Marion Allen Hargraves. He really cared for Alzada, his cousin. She was the only one from his home that continued to send him cards and letters when he went to the nursing home. Her thoughtfulness was so much appreciated by all of us.
