Avis Carruth

August 12, 1934 - March 24, 2018

Avis Joy Johnson Carruth, 83, of Silsbee, passed away March 24, 2018, in Sugar Land, Texas. She was born August 12, 1934, in San Augustine, Texas, to William Alwyn Johnson and Hazel Martin Johnson. She lived in Silsbee for sixty-one years and was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church.

 

She was preceded in death by her loving parents; her husband of forty-nine years, Louis E. Carruth; and two sisters, Martha Nell Johnson and Wylma Jean Renfroe.

 

Avis is survived by two children, Michael Rossi Carruth and wife, Tana, of Fred, Texas, and Lorre Carruth Kauffman and husband, Stacy, of Sugar Land, Texas; grandchildren, Sommer Buckner and husband, Blake; Madison Kauffman; Mallory Kauffman; and Kurt Kauffman; great-grandchildren, Hyde, Haisley, Holden, and Hadison Buckner; nieces: Paula Schwark, Jana Bailey, and Belle Cherry; and sister-in-law, Lucille Houston.

 

Serving as loving friends and pallbearers are Sam Ashworth, Don Dickerson, Mike Morrison, Randall Moulder, Gary Spears, and Randy Stanton. Honorary pallbearers are David Eaves, Tom Hardy, Don Kay, and Joe Nelson.

 

After growing up in the Bland Lake community and graduating from San Augustine High School, Avis attended North Texas State University in Denton. In Dallas, she worked for Oak Farm Dairies as a secretary. After moving to Silsbee, she married and became a stay-at-home wife and mom. While raising her children, she served as a Cub Scout leader, Blue Bird mom, and Sunday School teacher. She was a substitute teacher in Silsbee ISD for many years.

 

Avis loved spending time sewing, deer hunting, fishing, riding four wheelers, driving her big white truck, and playing with her grandkids. She loved being a mother and her favorite role in life was MawMaw.

 

A gathering of Mrs. Carruth’s family and friends will begin at 12:00 p.m., with her funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 31, 2018, Pinecrest Baptist Church, 5660 FM 1122, Silsbee, Texas, with Pastor Bill Coffey officiating. Her interment will follow at R.S. Farmer Memorial Cemetery, in Silsbee, under the direction of Broussard’s, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee.
