Dear Shelly, It is a life-changing event when you lose a parent. Our paths have not crossed lately but you are in my heart forever know that I love you during this difficult time. Sonny and I shared the same birthday on a different year, I find some meaning to that - social distance hug Kelley

I am so sorry to read that Bernard has passed away. We met in 1957 in school and have been good friends ever since. We played ball and went to French High together. May God give you and your family a peace that passes all understanding at this time.

My brother and I grew up with Bernard a few blocks away.. His dad was fireman and we had 3 uncles in fired dept. Beaumont hired a lot of Hardin county men in those days.. Bernard and I only lived few miles apart but we lost contact as adults. I remember him being a good athlete and always nice to people . He wore a big smile and was well liked. RIP old friend. .

Condolences for your loss. I remember an event with Sonny I have not forgotten. It was in the 1960's or early 70's. I can't remember the extact event, but I do remember Sonny wearing a Green Beret uniform or some other special forces uniform. I was impressed enough it was engrained in my memory., Also, with his lifetime service as a Fireman, Sonny was what I describe as "Hero."

Karla and all the family, I am so sadden and sorry to hear of the loss of Sonny. Me and Bobby a fellow fireman and friend knew him years ago. I got to visit with him at Sharon visitation and was the first time I had seen him in a long time. So glad we had that time to visit. I know the heart break of losing a spouse. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I real nice man and know he will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him. . My Deepest Sympathy Aline Haas Broussard

I have wonderful memories of Barnard. We grew up together. He lived on Taylor Street and I lived on Monroe Street. We played together as kids. Remember walking to Edward's Elementary past the fire station where his dad worked. Remember how much he loved to play basketball. Remember those high school years at French HS. So sorry for your loss. I know he will be missed.

I went on shift in October 1986. I was assigned to Engine 12 with Sonny as my first Captain. About three weeks later, the dispatcher sent us to a fire on Archie St. about 5 blocks from the station. It was the middle of the night and fire was coming out all the windows that you could see from the front. District Chief E.B. Shelton and Captain Richardson went around the back and found a window that didn't have fire coming out of it. Sonny and E.B. both climbed into the window with only a bunker coat on and no air pack. Chief Lyons sent about 3 of us to the back of the house to help. E.B. and Sonny handed us a young woman, a 5 year old boy, and a 2 year old girl. Sonny went down from smoke inhalation when he came out of the window. E.B. went around to the front and did CPR on the 2 year old. I would ride Engine 12 for the better part of 8 more years and a fire truck for a total of over 30 years and never again see that amount of heroism at one fire scene. Sonny and E.B. are true heroes. Sonny was a great firefighter, a great friend, and someone I always looked up to. I know Sonny had a great life. He did it his way. Prayers for Karla and his family.
