Bob Massey

February 7, 1941 - January 4, 2018

Robert Dale Massey of Beaumont, Texas passed peacefully to eternal rest on Thursday, January 4th, 2018, after a courageous battle with Cancer.

Robert, affectionately known as Bob, was born February 7, 1941 in Los Fresnos, Texas to Sarah and Galen Massey. Along with his brother, A.W., Bob enjoyed his childhood in South Texas where they routinely explored the outdoors hunting, fishing and camping. A.W. remembers fondly how he would come home from school and his big brother would be waiting with everything they needed to immediately go hunt for whatever was in season. A favorite pastime was treasure hunting with his father at “Boca Chica”, the mouth of the Rio Grande River, for Civil War relics. He proudly displayed these relics and shared them with visitors. Fishing was another favorite pastime. Bob loved wade fishing in the Gulf and spent many nights fishing on the beach. His love of fishing continued throughout his life.

Bob graduated from Los Fresnos High School where he was an outstanding athlete. He then attended Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas on a track scholarship and served as team co-captain setting records that still hold to this day. He twice participated in the Border Olympics placing 2nd in track competitions. Upon receiving his degree in Government, he began a career in coaching in Port Isabell, Texas

He later coached football in Ingleside, Texas and worked at an insurance company during the summers. Eventually, Bob began working in the insurance field full time and owned a successful Insurance Company in Brownsville and was very active in the business community. In 1991, he moved to Beaumont and opened up several furniture stores.

Bob had two sons, Robert Scott and Thomas Galen. The family enjoyed raising show cattle and won many competitions in local fairs, the Texas State Fair and across the U.S. Bob owned a plane when the boys were young was and loved taking them on all kinds of adventures.

Bob and his beloved wife Gloria were the perfect hosts and welcomed any opportunity to open their home to let love and life flow in. They regularly hosted holidays, birthdays, weddings and longstanding card games. Having their family and friends gathered in their home so he could cook for them was Bob’s passion. Everyone raved over his cooking, always looking forward to being surrounded by the aroma and his music blaring.

Bob’s greatest pride and happiness was his grandchildren Mazlin, Chase, Garrett and Thomas.   He and Gloria cherished attending their countless concerts, sporting games, performances, sporting and shooting events.

Bob was always active in the communities where lived. He was a Mason in the San Benito chapter and supported the opening of the Girls Haven facility in Beaumont. He was a member of Calder Street Baptist Church.

In recent years, you could always find Bob with his adored group of Whataburger friends. With enough time and enough coffee they could solve the worlds problems.  They all became such regulars at the Dowlen location that their group photo hangs on the wall as you enter the restaurant.

Robert “Bob” Dale Massey is survived by his wife Gloria; sons Scott and Tom and his devoted daughter-in-law DeAnn; stepdaughters Christina Crawford and her husband, Josh, and Danielle Delgadillo; his grandchildren Mazlin, Chase, Garrett and Thomas; his brother A.W. and sister-in-law Sherri; niece Taylor Weber and her husband Larry; nephew Chad Massey; his special friend Troy Subject whom he loved as a son; his loving sisters-in law and brothers-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews; and his inseparable loving dog, Goldie. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Sarah and Galen Massey.

A gathering of Mr. Massey’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Sunday, January 7, 2018, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 8, 2018, at Calder Baptist Church, 1005 North 11th Street, Beaumont, with his interment to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Groves.
