Cathy Anne Tompkins

July 3, 1949 - September 14, 2019

Cathy Anne Tompkins, 70, of Fannett, died Saturday, September 14, 2019, at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston. She was born on July 3, 1949, in Beaumont, to Wanna B Rhodes and Clifford Frederick.

The oldest of nine siblings, Cathy grew up in a rambunctious, but loving home. Cathy attended school in South Park, where she met her husband, Tim, in the eighth grade. They were smitten from there on out and exemplified the true definition of love throughout their 51-year-marriage.

Cathy, known to most as “Nana,” has been the matriarch of the family, for both her siblings and her own children, grandchildren and great-grandchild. She was the guidance that kept everyone on track, the support that lifted everyone up, and the glue that held everyone together.

Cathy enjoyed spending time with her family and made every function that she possibly could. She was heavily involved at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, where she was a eucharistic minister and a faithful helper at every Knights of Columbus event. Most recently, she spent her free time quilting and relaxing at her and her husband’s “villa” near the Frio River in Concan, Texas.

Survivors include her husband, Tim Tompkins; son, Jeremy Tompkins and his wife, Carrie, of Vidor; daughter, Samantha Richard and her husband, Jared, of Fannett; grandchildren, Tori Valigura and her husband, Taylor; Katelyn Smith; Cole Tompkins; Luke Richard; and Camryn Tompkins; great-granddaughter, Avery Smith; brother, Mike Frederick and his wife, Sharon, of Fannett; sister, Karen Lombardo and her husband, Frank, of Lumberton; brothers, Mark Frederick and his wife, Brenda, of Beaumont; Phillip Frederick and his wife, Lori, of Orangefield; and Timothy Frederick of Georgetown; sister, Stacie Sandoval and her husband, Jeff, of League City; brother, Chris Frederick and his wife, Amy, of Bevil Oaks; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Randy Frederick.

A gathering of Mrs. Tompkins’ family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary recited at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 17, 2019, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 18, 2019, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 9894 Gilbert Road, Fannett. Her interment will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park, Port Neches.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105 or Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas, 2780 Eastex Freeway, Beaumont, Texas 77703.

The words of that old song, :Ain't no sunshine when your gone," come to mind when I consider the loss of Cathy's smile. She was a steady and good friend to many at Provost Umphrey Law Firm for many years. The news of her illness saddened everyone who knew her because to know her was to love and admire her. Kindness was her abundant asset and she shared it freely. My prayers continue for the family; for God's strength and perfect peace to fill you.

During this sorrowful time, I will keep Cathy's husband, children, grandchildren, and all her siblings in my prayers. May you all be recipients of God's peace that surpasses understanding. I pray that each special treasured and cherished memory will bring comfort to you all in the days and weeks and months to come. Being first born in a large family inherently brings a sense of responsibility. In reading of Cathy it sounds as she fulfilled her responsibilities tenfold and has left a legacy that would make any woman proud as she must have been of each and every one of you. I pray that you all cling to one another during this time and forever more. My thoughts and prayers are with you. God bless you all.

Cathy and I worked together at McArthur Middle School. She was always there to lending helping hand and her ears to listen. Her bright smile greeted us each day.

Phyllis Mason Hunter

prayers for strength and healing to the entire family, and especially my classmate Stacie. There’s nothing quite like the love of a sister. I worked in the office at MacArthur Middle School as a student when Mrs Tompkins was secretary. We all loved her and I appreciated her kindness to me and all the other students and staff at the school. ❤️
