Dan A. English, Jr.

August 8, 1921 - November 25, 2018

Dan A. English, Jr., devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2018, in Beaumont, Texas.

Dan English, Jr. was born on August 8, 1921, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Dan Alexander English and Salee King English. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Dallas, Texas, where Dan attended Woodrow Wilson High School and graduated from Highland Park High School. He attended Southern Methodist University, graduating with a degree in civil engineering and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. It was at SMU where Dan met the love of his life, Elliott Doyle. Dan and Elliott were married August 14, 1943 and they spent the next 68 years happily together until her death in 2012.

In 1944, Dan enlisted in the Navy and was commissioned as an ensign before shipping out to the Pacific aboard the USS Oglethorpe during World War II. When Dan returned from the service, he and Elliot moved to Fort Worth where he joined Gulf Oil’s pipeline division. This was followed by a move to Shreveport, Louisiana, where their first son, Dan A. English III was born. After moving to Houston for several years, the family spend two years in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where their second son, James Doyle English (Jim) was born. In 1963, Dan took a position with Colonial Pipeline and the family settled in Beaumont, Texas, where Dan and Elliott resided for the rest of their lives. After retiring from Colonial in 1986, the couple traveled extensively but saved their summers for relaxation at their favorite place, their cabin at Switzerland Park in the mountains near Boulder, Colorado.

Dan was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church for 55 years, where he served as a Deacon and an Elder. He was also an active hunter and fisherman who loved spending time with his sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dan is preceded in death by his wife, Elliott; brother, Hugh King English and sister, Sarah English Cretien. He is survived by sons, Dan A. English III and his wife, Kay, and Jim English and his wife, Vicki; grandchildren, Dan A. English IV and his wife, Dianne; Spencer D. English and his wife, Tara; Ellen English Sheedy and her husband, Andrew C. Sheedy; and Davis D. English; and great-grandchildren, Charles Sheedy, Margaret Sheedy, James McDonnell English, and Dan A. English V.

A memorial service for Mr. English will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 1, 2018, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 1350 North 23rd Street,Beaumont. A gathering will follow in the Parlor. His cremation was held through Broussard’s Crematorium under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 1350 North 23rd Street, Beaumont, Texas 77706.
