Mr Johnson was an amazing teacher to me and my Nederland band mates. I had the honor of being his student from junior high into high school at Nederland, so I truly grew up with David as my teacher and became a competent flute player. My best friend and I like to give him heck in class though, all in good fun. David fascinated us all by being able to play every single instrument and taught us with patience and love. He stuck with us kids through marching and playing at football games, rain or shine, heat or cold. Mr. Johnson was loved and will be greatly missed.

Mr. Johnson was one of the directors of three of my children at Barbers Hill High School. I spoke with David on several occasions, and each time I could hear, and feel, his love for music, the love he had for the band he was serving, and his strong commitment to make sure every musician he worked with was working hard to perform at their best. What I loved most about him was the quiet influence he had on his students. He never asked to be applauded, nor did he seek the spotlight. He worked behind the scenes so his students could shine. He never took credit for their accomplishments; he always made sure that his students believed in themselves. David, your physical presence will be missed, but your spirit will live long in the hearts of the students you touched.

Word's Cannot describe how much of an Impact Mr. Johnson had on my life personally during my time at Barbers Hill. Even on the bad day's Mr. Johnson provided me with words of hope and inspiration. For me it was more than just Band Class with Mr. Johnson he made it fun and exciting and never failed to make me smile and laugh with his wonderful humor. I always admired his love for life as well as his down to Earth caring personality. Before graduation I had the opportunity to tell him how gratetful I was for him taking me under his wing and that he helped shape me into the Man I am today and that I was forever greateful for God putting him in my life. The world needs more people like Mr. Johnson and although gone to soon his loving spirit and legacy will live on in each one of his Family, Friends, and Students like me who will honor his legacy as we go out in the World. I’m so thankful for all of the encouragement he gave over the years to both of us. My daughter would not be the same without him and we are forever grateful for the laughs and guidance over the years. He will be missed.

I remember the 1st day Mr Johnson came and became apart of the Barbers Hill crazy family that we are. The times when he would joke about our horns not being up at the box or us missing one note just for him to blast his trumpet straight in our faces but only just to encourage us more to become better musicians. He was and will forever be one of the main reasons why I want to continue on my music career throughout college. Sadly, I am attending school in California so I couldn't attend the funeral or hug any band family members but I give my deepest condolences to everyone that is heartbroken and saddened by this news as I am. However, I know somewhere up in heaven, Mr Johnson is playing his trumpet, getting all the Angels up on their feet and dancing. Mr. Johnson, I want to say thank you so much for making my four years of high school one of the best years of my life. Through my bad and good times, you were always there to encourage me and my class to be the best musicians that we can be. I hope you rest well as you did an amazing job not only being our band director but our best friend! ❤

I am deeply saddened by the loss of a friend, teacher, and mentor. I struggled with depression and anxiety my whole time in high school. Mr. Johnson could always tell when I was down and would find a way to pick me up. He was there to listen to me rant about life, family, and school. He genuinely cared. I told him about how sad I was and that I needed an escape. He helped me to see the potential I had. I would not be the man I am now with out him. I find myself saying thigs he said at work. The memories I have with him will be with me always. Thank you Mr. Johnson for all you have done for me and so many others. Till we meet again
