Donald Mitchell
Donald “Brother Don” Mitchell, 85, of Wildwood, died Saturday, July 6, 2019. He was born in Pollock, on August 21, 1933, to Hester Nantz Mitchell and John Mitchell.
Brother Don pastored over sixty years, the last three churches he pastored were Allendale in Houston, Pine Forest Baptist in Vidor, and Wildwood Baptist in Wildwood.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Mitchell of Wimberley and formerly of Wildwood; children, Dwanna Zyla and her husband, Lou, and Charlotte Schobel, all of Wimberley; grandchildren, Stephen Turner and his wife, Carly, of Deer Park; Matt Turner and his wife, Patty, of Clear Lake; John Turner and his wife, Ashley, of Pasadena; and Joshua Schobel of Rockdale; stepchildren, Ivan Zyla and his wife, Michele, of Dedham, Massachusetts and Taras Zyla and his wife, Catie, of Oakland, California; twelve great-grandchildren; and sister, Janet Nolan of Newton. He is preceded in death by his parents; and son, Tracy Patrick Mitchell.
A gathering of Don’s family and friends will be 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at Broussard’s, 530 West Monroe, Kountze. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 10, 2019, at Wildwood Baptist Church, 100 Wildwood Drive, Village Mills, with his interment at 2:00 p.m., at Mitchell Cemetery, Wiergate.

I was so saddened today to hear of the passing of Bro Don Mitchell. He will truly be missed by all those that knew and loved him. He was one of the kindest gentleman that I have ever known...a sweetheart with the sweetest heart and the kind of Christian that we all should strive to be. He walked the walk and talked the talk every day of his life. Today he is an angel in Heaven and in a good place talking to his Jesus face to face. I loved you dearly...Bro Don...rest in peace. My sympathy goes out to his beautiful wife and family.

Brother Don was the kindest, most loving pastor I have ever known. I first met him in the summer of 1975. I had flown home from summer missions to sing at my sister's wedding. At the rehearsal, he asked if I needed a microphone. I told him that I did not, and he looked at me like he was thinking, "She certainly has some nerve." After I sang, he realized I really didn't need a microphone! He was so good and so kind, and helped me during difficult situations. I remember when Elwyn Gunn came to Pine Forest, and how well they worked together. Elwyn said that he was the best pastor he had ever worked with. Brother Don sang one Sunday because of a challenge that had been presented, and I will never forget it. He couldn't sing, but he did it anyhow. He was willing to risk embarrassment in order to win people to Christ. He will always be the picture of what an ideal pastor should be. He was well loved, and I know that he was welcomed into heaven with the words, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." It is an honor to have known this wonderful man. God bless his family during this time, and give them peace and comfort.

Brother Mitchell made a good and lasting impression on my life. He became the pastor at Pine Forest when I was about 5, so he was my pastor into adulthood.. A wonderful man who loved God and all of his family and congregation. I loved to hear him preach his services, they were always so insightful. He married Scott and I 35 years ago. My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time. Rest in peace Bro Mitchell

I doubt I would have walked my life in the same way with the influence of Bro. Don. He was essential to my spiritual development, preformed marriages, guided me during some of the darkest times in my life and preached, and walked, the Word of God. My prayers are with Wanda during this time, and the entire family. Prayers for the multitude of friends as well.

I was saddened to hear of Bro. Don’s passing. I won’t be able to attend his service, but please know that we are praying for you and your family. Don was such a sweet gentle man and I know he will be missed tremendously.

Brother Don was an extraordinary man and a true Christian. He was always nothing but kind and showed love to everyone he ever met. I am saddened by the worlds loss but know that he is rejoicing with our Lord and Savior. Bro. Don was a great blessing to my grandparents, Emmett and Hazel Dammon. My grandfather went visiting with Bro. Don every week. It set a great example for me, and it is a practice I follow to this day in my ministry. Bro. Don was a kind-hearted man and devoted servant of the Lord. Heaven is richer now. I am sure he and my grandfather have been reminiscing about their adventures together when they were at Wildwood.
