Dorothy Purkerson

Dorothy Ann Purkerson, 88, of Nederland, died Wednesday, September 30, 2020, at Lizette’s Loving Care, Nederland. She was born August 13, 1932, in Port Arthur, to Mary Alice Johnson May and Robert E. May.

Dorothy lived a long wonderful life with her loving husband, Purk. When she and her family moved from her hometown of Nederland to Lubbock, Dorothy worked as a secretary for Coach “Spike” Dykes in the Texas Tech Athletic Department. Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her many lifelong friends and playing bridge at the Pompano. Dorothy will always be remembered as “dressing to the nines,” with her hair, nails, and jewelry perfect. She loved going dancing, and she cherished her moments relaxing with family and friends at her beach house in Crystal Beach.  First United Methodist Church of Nederland holds a special place in Dorothy’s heart, where she attended services as a child, and married the love of her life in 1952.

Dorothy’s smile and sense of humor were loved by all. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children, her grandchildren, her precious dog Prissy, and she cherished every moment with her devoted daughter, Kelly and her son Doug.

Survivors include her children, Doug Purkerson and wife, Marva, of Sea Brook and Kelly Ellis and husband, Stuart, of Nederland; grandchildren, Nick; Mark; Marisa; Megan; Hunter; Sherrie; Lindsay; Kristin; Lennon; Barrett; Ana; Kaley; Ricardo; Joaquin; Emilio; and Reagan.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Mary Alice and Robert May; husband of forty-nine years, Ray Purkerson; and sister, Roberta Berlin.

Mrs. Purkerson’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude and love to Lena Jones and Lizette Ellis for their devoted care and loving companionship to Dorothy.

A gathering of Mrs. Purkerson’s family and friends will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Sunday, October 4, 2020, at Broussard’s, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland. From Houston, our condolences to the entire family for your loss. Dorothy's mother, Mary Alice, and my mother, Fay Addcox, were first cousins. Although i am a lot younger than Dorothy, I remember her so well. Our family spent many a weekend at Crystal Beach with the May family, I remember Dorothy and Purk as a young married couple, before having children. She was always so beautiful. I can remember seeing Purk carry Dorothy in his arms along the shore on a beautiful sunset evening and I thinking it was the most romantic thing I had ever seen. I am sorry that our families have loss contact with each other over the years but think of them all so very often. I often tell the story of Dorothy's father giving me a dollar to eat a raw oyster when I was 11 years old. I still eat them with a sauce according to his recipe. Again, my family's condolences for your loss and we will visit gravesite on our next visit to the cemetery.

Doug and Kelly. Your Mom, Dad, and both of you have been such an important part of my life no matter how much distance and how many years apart. The times we spent with you, your Mom and Dad at the beach or your house will forever be a part of me. Your Mom was so loved by so many and her loss leaves a big whole, but she will always be with us and will continue to watch over you. I will never forget your Mom as she definitely holds a very special place in my heart. We will see her again one day—of that, I am sure! Much love, Pat
