Drue McMullen Talley

April 6, 1934 - December 10, 2018

Drue McMullen Talley, 84, of Beaumont, died Monday, December 10, 2018, at Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas, Beaumont. She was born on April 6, 1934, to Eva Sue Payne McMullen and William Harvey McMullen, in McAlester, Oklahoma.

Drue was a caring, vibrant, devout soul who was committed to helping others throughout her lifetime. Professionally, she was the legal secretary for attorney Melvin Combs for several years before he was elected Judge of the 60th District Court of Jefferson County, Texas. Drue then served as the court coordinator for Judge Combs during his first term from 1953 until 1956, after which he returned to private practice. Drue was his secretary again until Judge Combs returned to the bench of that same court in 1970, where he remained with Drue again serving as his court coordinator until Judge Combs died in office in 1980. Thereafter, Drue remained the coordinator of the court for Judge Bob Wortham and then Judge Gary Sanderson until she retired.

Being the outgoing, service-minded person that she was, Drue was active in the community after retirement. As long as her health would allow, she was always willing to assist however she was needed at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Beaumont, and also served as a volunteer at a local Beaumont theater for performing arts.

Survivors include her nephews, Bob Scruggs of Houston and Randall C. Adam of Healdsburg, California; niece, Laurie A. Jacob of Wellesley, Massachusetts; and cousin, Ray McMullen of Houston.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence E. Talley; and sister, Mary McMullen Scruggs.

A gathering of Mrs. Talley’s family and friends will begin at 10:00 a.m., with her memorial service to follow at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A family graveside service was held at Magnolia Cemetery, Beaumont.

Drue has held a special place in my heart for almost 40 yrs. She & Talley were close friends when my boys were very young. She had a fabulous sense of humor & was very talented creatively as well. I have needlework that she did for me & that I treasure. There is no doubt in my mind that she has a very special place in heaven. God bless Drue... Linda Wortham Cook

Drue was one of my mother’s best friends ( Jan LeBlanc). They spent many hours together each week having lunch and playing card games in the afternoon. The Leblanc’s, Broussard’s and Talley’s were also known to spend many enjoyable weekends playing a friendly game of poker at each other’s homes or going out dancing. I also remember a few pillow fights at the beach along with hours of mom and Drue relaxing together while reading or cross stitching. They both loved the beach and time spent with their many friends there. .Drue has a very special place in our family.
