Ellis Thweatt, Sr.

July 12, 1930 - January 1, 2020

Ellis E. Thweatt, Sr., 89, of Nederland, passed away peacefully in his sleep January 1, 2020, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was born on July 12, 1930, in Paris, Texas, to Olie Shomate Thweatt and Willie Thweatt, Jr. Ellis was better known as “Thweatt” or “Papa” to his family and friends.

Thweatt worked for Nederland I.S.D. For thirty years as the Head Custodian at Hillcrest Elementary. He was always willing to help build anything for his teachers to make their life easier, and he loved to do any kind of wood work for anyone. Thweatt would go fishing everyday if he could, and he didn’t care how small the fish was that he caught. It always put a smile on his face. He played and sang as often as he could and sometimes, he even played an air guitar. Thweatt was a member of Freedom Christian Fellowship in Port Neches, Texas.

Survivors include his wife of thirty-five years, Dorothy Thweatt, of Nederland; son, Ellis E. Thweatt, Jr., of Port Neches; step daughters, Carolyn Koonce and her husband, Randy, of Stanton; Patricia Gibson, of Nederland; stepson, Randall Hughes and his wife, Donna, of Waxahachie; twelve grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Birdie Dickerson, of Eagle Town, Oklahoma.

He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Marie Martin; son, Eddie Dale Thweatt; stepson, Clifton Roy Mosley; and seven sisters.

A gathering of Mr. Thweatt’s family and friends will begin at 9:00 a.m., with his funeral service to follow at 10:30, a.m., Saturday, January 4, 2020, at Freedom Christian Fellowship, 1413 Port Neches Avenue, Port Neches. His interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Groves.

The family would like to give a very special thank you to the following: Kindred Hospice and their staff for taking such good care of Thweatt; Heather, his nurse; Darrel Hughes; Vickie Potts; Miranda Puz; Mark Brown; Patricia Gibson for helping to take care of dad and better the quality of his everyday life sun up to sun down; and Carrie Klock for loving Thweatt as her own and going the extra mile to take care of him around the clock until the minute he went to be with the Lord.

I remember Mr. Thweatt from Hillcrest (1970-75). He was such a nice man who always smiled and all the children loved him. Peace be with you during this time.
