Ernest Sparks

Ernest Gene Sparks, 73, died Friday, November 2, 2018, in Beaumont. He was born December 8, 1944, in Honey Island. Though he lived most of his childhood years in Kountze, Ernest Gene along with his parents and brother lived in various states across the United States as his father worked in construction. It was likely the traveling in his early years that sparked an adventurous spirit in Ernest Gene. After serving in the Army he met and fell in love with Betty. They married on December 7, 1963. He loved and adored his wife. Ernest Gene worked in the oilfield which he enjoyed. He worked for various oilfield companies throughout his career. His adventurous spirit and consulting work allowed him to travel to Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China and Saudi Arabia as well as many states across the United States.

He volunteered at the Buckner Children’s Home, tutoring boys in math. Ernest Gene was very outgoing and always made friends wherever he went. He made sure to smile, say hello and wave to everyone even if he didn’t know them. His laughter smile and sense of humor will be missed!

Ernest Gene was a member of First Baptist Church in Lumberton since 1989. He is preceded in death by his father, Albert Adam Sparks, Jr.; mother, Gwendolyn Oneida Sparks; brother, David Sparks and Mike Sparks.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Betty Sparks; daughter, Regina Douglas and her husband, Ron; son, David Sparks and his wife, Jennifer; four grandchildren, Joshua Douglas and his wife, Carly; Brandi Harvey and her husband, Travis; Breanne Sparks; and Madeline Sparks; one great-grandchild, Tessa Kay Douglas; and great-granddaughter on the way.

A gathering of Mr. Sparks’ family and friends will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 5, 2018, at Broussard’s, 530 West Monroe, Kountze. His graveside service will at 11:20 a.m., at Holland Cemetery, Kountze, with military honors by the Southeast Texas Veterans Group. Serving as pallbearers will be Ron Douglas, Joshua Douglas, Travis Harvey, Ernest Dunlap, Michael Sparks, and Hicks Dunlap.
