Gertrude Carruth Cherry
June 25, 1932 - August 10, 2018
Gertrude Carruth Cherry, 86, of Beaumont, died Friday, August 10, 2018. She was born on June 25, 1932, in Avollyes Parish, Louisiana, but spent most of her life in Beaumont, a town she deeply loved.
Gertrude’s greatest passions were her family, friends, church, civic organizations and politics. She was an active member of the Democratic Party, League of Women Voters and the Garden Club, and served for many years on the executive board of Land Manor Halfway House. Most people would describe Gertrude as “spunky” or “a pistol.” She performed countless charitable acts, many that were well known but even more that she did privately.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Daniel Cherry, and daughter in law, Dr. Maria Gibson, of Scottsdale, Arizona; her grandson, Christian Cherry, of Tempe, Arizona and brother, Claude Carruth, of Lumberton, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Richard Cherry, a long-time professor at Lamar University.
A memorial service for Mrs. Cherry will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 27, 2018, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 680 Calder Avenue, Beaumont. Her cremation arrangements were handled through Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont under the direction of Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont.

Gertrude and I were lunch buddies and often shared coffee Tuesday afternoon at Market Basket with the '"fellows." We were Yellow Dog Democrats - often in a sea of red. I will miss Gertrude and her texts and lunches and visits and seeing her in her spot on the aisle at church Sunday mornings.
