November 3, 1932 - January 2, 2021

Helen R. Duhon, of Lumberton, Texas, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, January 2, 2021, at the age of 88.

Helen was born to Claude and Ella Romero, November 3, 1932, in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She graduated from LaGrange High School and then went on to graduate from nursing school at Hotel Dieu, where she met the love of her life, while caring for his mother. She worked as a registered nurse for doctors in private practice.

Everyone that knew Helen knew of her great love for her Catholic faith, and she was actively involved in her parishes, St. Pius X and Infant Jesus.

Helen treasured her family and devoted her life to caring for them while they grew and thrived. She was married to her devoted husband, Fritz, for 63 years. God blessed them with five beautiful children, twelve grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Fritz J. Duhon, Sr.; her daughter, Brenda LaRocca; her parents; and siblings, Lula Stone, Raymond Romero, and Fred Romero.

She is survived by her daughters, Donna Price and her husband, Tommy, of Boerne, and Claudia Duhon of Lumberton; sons, Fritz J. Duhon, Jr. “Buddy” and his wife, Darla, and Felix “Paul” Duhon and his wife, Susie, all of Lumberton; grandchildren, Christopher Price, Sean Price, Savannah Price, Elise LaRocca, Erica LaRocca-Odom, Lauren Guzman, Hank LaRocca, Adam LaRocca, Dylan Duhon, Mallory Hunley, Paige Duhon, and Brooke Duhon; great-grandchildren, Cole Toomey, Zachary Broom, Riley Hooks, Bryce Hooks, Brenna Hooks, Levi Broom, Wyatt Odom, Hudson Odom, Braden Guzman, Christian Guzman, Jace Guzman, Cameron Guzman, Brielle Guzman, Sofia LaRocca, Henry LaRocca IV “Cruz”, Isabella “Bella” LaRocca, Avery Duhon, and Braxton Hunley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her family would like to thank Montebello Home Care and Best Hospice Care of Texas for helping us keep our mom at home where her husband wanted her to be. This would not have been possible without the loving care given to her by Lindsey, Chasity, Phyllis, Isabella, Krista, Joe, and Miesha. Her hospice nurse, Cassie, did an amazing job of caring for Mom in her final days.

A gathering of Mrs. Duhon’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary recited at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 7, 2021, at Infant Jesus Catholic Church, 243 South LHS Drive, Lumberton. My heart hurts for you, Claudia and the whole Duhon Family! I loved your mom and her gentle, sweet personality. She always made me smile when I was around her. I enjoyed the times I was able to play dominoes with her, my mom and the other ladies in the “Domino Group”. I know you will miss her every day but can smile knowing she is reunited with your dad and living in paradise. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. May the perpetual light shine upon her, may she rest in peace!

In the late sixties, under doctors’ orders, Ms. Helen helped a neighbor with a real need for her nursing skills. This happened several dozen times. Her actions were Christ-like and forever appreciated. She was an earthly angel. One of the truly great ladies from the old Beaumont North End. Elaine and I would like to offer our sincere condolences to Donna and the entire Duhon family.

Praying for the Duhon family at your time of loss now. I was in Belles with Brenda and have a memory of her in her home at the sewing machine. Even as a child, I remember her high energy level. Many condolences and hugs to you all.

I had the great privilege of knowing Helen as a friend when Fritz was coaching Little League . Such a wonderful human being. When my father was dying, Helen and her girls took in my girls as their own so I could be with my dad in his last days here on earth. The Duhon family are great people. My sincere condolences. Much love to you all.

To the Duhon family: My first memories of Ms. Helen began in the late sixties. I attended "junior high" school with Donna. There were, of course, weekends of "slumber parties" during those days. To be clear, no slumbering was done at slumber parties. There was lots of pranks and endless giggling throughout the night. Ms. Helen seemed to always enjoy a house full of kiddos and all the noise and chaos that they created. Her smile was so warm and she made each of us feel as though we were part of the Duhon clan. I have one special memory of the Duhon home that has never faded.. It was the beautiful photo of Ms. Helen in her 1950's nursing uniform, cap and that classic nursing cape. I was mesmerized by this photo. This kindhearted lady that I was drawn to in the photo, inspired me to become a nurse one day. I am brokenhearted to lose this precious jewel of the past. You all were blessed to have had such a loving lady nurture you through life. Her sense of humor, compassion and zest for life, will live on through each of you. Your family has been a special part of a lifetime of Leger memories. We love you all dearly. Ms. Helen will never be forgotten by us.

I am so sorry about Helen passing I have so many fond me.ories of growing up around the Duhon family. Mom, Aunt Sara and Helen are now sitting around drinking coffee and gossiping like they did from the time we were all small children. I can see Fritz in the background shaking his head with a smile on his face walking off letting the them enjoy themselves. God I miss those days. Love to all of you, keep those precious memories in your heart so they live on forever.
