James “Greg” Cobb, Jr.

September 27, 1953 - December 6, 2018

James Gregory Cobb, Jr., 65, of Beaumont, died December 6, 2018, surrounded by his loving family, under the care of Harbor Hospice. A native and lifelong resident of Beaumont, he was born September 27, 1953, the youngest of the three children of the late Aleene Bernice and James Gregory Cobb, Sr. Greg attended Forest Park High School and Lamar University, where he was a proud member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

Greg happily made his life’s work as the owner and broker of Cobb Real Estate, Crystal Beach, for over thirty-five years. He was a lover of life and all it entailed, namely the beach, the Dallas Cowboys, his lucky number 27, trying new restaurants, Jimmy Buffett, Hawaiian shirts, taking vacations, and his family. He also loved celebrating his birthday, but quite often forgot about ours. He was obsessed with gadgets. He loved the latest and greatest of everything- which was only fueled by his love of Shark Tank. Paulette won’t be out of the woods from mysterious packages arriving on her doorstep for the next 7-10 business days.

Greg is survived by his wife of twenty-four years, Paulette; his sons, James Gregory Cobb, III, of Los Angeles, California, and Tyler James Coco, his wife, Worley, of Beaumont; his daughter, Audrye Cobb Hodges, her husband, Chris, of Winnie; his grandchildren, Wyatt James Coco and John Oscar Coco, of Beaumont, and Charlotte Bernice Hodges of Winnie; his sisters, Dianne Cobb Walker, her husband, Haywood, and Patty Cobb Maida, her husband, Pete, all of Beaumont; his parents-in-law, B.B. and Larry Devillier; his brothers-in-law, Buddy Devillier, his wife, Sheri, and Dean Devillier, his wife, Pam, all of Winnie; his uncle, Howard Cobb of Beaumont; his aunt, Joy Busbee, her husband, Guinn, of Vidor; his eight nieces and nephews; and his twelve great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to his mother and father, Greg was preceded in death by his daughter, Lauren Coco.

After years of battling diabetes, kidney failure, a successful kidney-pancreas transplant, Hurricane Ike, and a devastating fire, Greg showed an incredible resilience. Unfortunately, last December brought the diagnosis of stage 4 renal cell carcinoma that ultimately took his life.

Above all else, Greg was fiercely loyal, quick-witted, genuine, and a complete original. He will be remembered as a kind and devoted father, stepfather, grandfather, husband, brother, and friend. He will be greatly missed.

A gathering of Papa Greg’s family and friends will be 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 9, 2018, at Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 10, 2018, at St. Anne Catholic Church, 2715 Calder Avenue, Beaumont, with interment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Beaumont.

The family wishes to thank, most of all, the Houston Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center team and the Kidney Institute of Houston for the beautiful gift of the last eleven years of Greg’s life. In addition, the family would like to thank the staff of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for the hope and care they provided, with special appreciation for the comforting guidance provided by the Acute Palliative Care Unit; Dr. Jim Kirby for his honesty and wisdom; and to the unwavering support system that has lifted us up throughout all of these years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Crystal Beach Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 2086, Crystal Beach, Texas 77650; or St. Anne Catholic School, 375 North 11th Street, Beaumont, Texas 77702.

Greg was my fraternity brother in college. A great guy and we remained friends until his passing. He sold my parents beach house in 1996. He always told me, if you ever miss the beach, call me because I have plenty of rentals, and after a couple of weeks, you will get the beach out of your system for another year. Prayers to the family.

I'm trying to find the words to tell you how sorry I am to hear about Greg. Back in 2005 he gave Keith and I a wonderful opportunity and we had 10 very fun and prosperous years at Cobb Real Estate. He was a great boss and despite all the physical issues over the years he never complained and always had a great attitude. He was a trooper!
