Jean Phelps

Emma Jean Bryce Phelps, 84, of Winnie, passed away February 12, 2019, in Beaumont, Texas. She was born on May 24, 1934, in Nara Visa, New Mexico, to Ruby Mae Corbitt and Bufford Clell Bryce, and lived in Winnie most of her adult life. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Jean was also very proud to be a United States Veteran, having served in the Women’s Army Corp, 1955-1956.

She is survived by sons, Melvin Keith Phelps and Frank “Bubba” Phelps, Jr. and his wife, Sheri; granddaughter, Sarah Phelps; grandson; Ben Phelps and his fiancée, Julie McMillian; great-granddaughters, Kaliah Spotts and Audrey Phelps; brothers, Richard Bryce and his wife; Marilyn and Roger Bryce and his wife, Bonnie; sister-in-law, Shirley Bryce Dykes; brothers-in-law, Homer Barrett and Raymond Kunefke; stepsister, Nancy Cathey Carter; stepbrother, Allen Cathey; and a host of other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank Phelps, Sr.; sisters, Ruby Ellen Bryce Barrett; Faye Bryce Kunefke; Thelma Carthell Bryce and Frances Naoma Bryce Smith; brothers, Lonnie Bryce and his wife, Wanda; George Bryce; James Edgar Bryce; and Harvey Buster Bryce; brother-in-law, W. C. Smith, Jr.; stepsisters, Joy Cathey Shelton and Mary Jean Ruff Sherill; stepbrothers, Clovis Cathey, Kenneth Cathey, and Paul Cathey.

A gathering of Mrs. Phelps family and friends will be at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, February 16, 2019, at Broussard’s, 134 West Buccaneer Drive, Winnie, with the service to follow at 2:00 p.m., at Broussard’s, Winnie. Her interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Winnie.
