Jerry "Butch" Hanley

November 30, 1943 - May 12, 2020

Jerry “Butch” Hanley, 76, of Nederland, died Tuesday, May 12, 2020, at Christus Hospital-St. Elizabeth, Beaumont. He was born on November 30, 1943, in Alexandria, Louisiana, to Ora Gladys Guin Hanley and Willie V. Hanley.

This humble, caring man of great character, who loved fishing, golf, cooking, and being surrounded by family, lived a long and full life serving his Lord God and his country, providing for family and giving to others. Jerry married his high school sweetheart, Linda, after sweeping her off her feet with one very bold kiss after a date at the county fair – and built a wonderful life and family with her. He joined the United States Air Force at the age of 18 and served his country honorably as a Corrosion Control Technician and Supervisor, earning several decorations including the Air Force Commendation Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; and National Defense Service Medal having served during the Vietnam Conflict and the Cold War era. After his retirement, Jerry used the skills he acquired in the Air Force to open his own small business, an auto body repair shop, with his brother Billy Hanley. He later worked for both Boeing and Hanley Enterprise, before landing a career with the Sun Oil Company (SUNOCO) from where he retired after fifteen years of service. Jerry will always be remembered for his work ethic, toughness, kindness, generosity, occasional cantankerousness, playful goading, and his unquestionable dedication and devotion to family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-nine years, Linda Hanley, of Nederland; daughters, Karen Whipple and her husband, Chuck, of Nederland; Janalin Brickley and her husband, Edgar, of College Station; Connie Shannon and her husband, Mike, of Lumberton; Lisa Hanley, of Nederland; and Renae Romero and her husband, Chris, of Groves; sixteen grandchildren, Tina Whipple; Daniel Whipple; Garrett Whipple; Jared Meyer; Jason Meyer; Alisha Brickley; Michael Shannon; Lauren Walker; Josh Shannon; Jerry S. Jerry was a special friend of mine and my late brother Mike. When I was living in Texas at "the lake", Jerry would stop by and visit with me sometimes for hours. He was a really great guy, and has now ended his earthly suffering and welcomed in to Glory with his Lord.
