Kirby Smith

March 17, 1962 - September 15, 2018

Kirby Todd Smith, 56, of San Antonio, died Saturday September 15, 2018. He was born on March 17, 1962, in Beaumont, Texas, to Phyllis and Carl Lane Smith. Kirby graduated from Forest Park High School in 1980 and received his Bachelors of Business Administration from Lamar University in 1984.

As a young child, Kirby became involved in various sports and quickly rose to lead his peers as president of his class and several different scholastic clubs and organizations. Kirby contributed a significant amount of time, along with his two older brothers, father and mother, to the Boy Scouts of America. He received his Eagle Scout Award in 1976 and was a brotherhood member in the Order of the Arrow. Kirby was a member of the Texas Epsilon chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He was a collegiate track athlete and cheerleader at Lamar University.

After graduation, Kirby moved to Austin, Texas, where he married Kimberly Corley. Together they have three children: Travis Colton Smith, Kylie Alexis Smith and Austin Parker Smith. Kirby had a 27-year career in the medical services industry in various leadership roles. He was respected by his peers and considered a friend by many. Kirby had many hobbies and loved the great outdoors. You would often find him in the deer stand, hiking his favorite hill country trails with his dogs, Noel and Denali, or behind the lens of a camera. He was best known for his love of chocolate chip cookies and peanut M&M’s. If he wasn’t off-roading in his Dodge Charger, or burning something in the kitchen, he was cheering on his children. Kirby’s never-ending love and undying devotion to his children defined him. He made countless sacrifices to ensure they were given the best life possible.

His father, Carl Lane Smith, precedes Kirby in death. He is survived by his mother, Phyllis Smith; brothers, Howard Smith and his wife Sandra and Dr. Joel Lane Smith and his fiancé, Debby Chisum, all of Beaumont, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Abby and Travis Smith of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Kylie Smith of Austin, Texas; son, Austin Smith of San Antonio, Texas; nine nieces and nephews and six (soon to be seven) great nieces and nephews.

A gathering of Mr. Smith’s family and friends will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, September 20, 2018, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont, Texas. A celebration of his life will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 21, 2018, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3810 North Major Drive, Beaumont, Texas, with Reverend Rick Ivey officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Beaumont.

I am so sorry to hear of Kirby's passing. He was one of the best.. We were good friends at one time, but like many things, time drifted us part and we went our own way. The Lord took him too soon, but maybe the Lord needed to smile, and Kirby was always good at making other smile. Rest In Peace My Friend.

To the Smith Family, I'm sorry to hear about Kirby. I just found out today about him. I went to high school with Kirby and he was not only a friend but a leader off and on the Football field. He was one of the best defensive backs Forest Park ever had. We call him “Captain Crunch” he was fast and quick. When hit you, you knew it had to be him. I have lots of memories of him back in school and at times when on the field if he saw something to help make you better, he would tell you. I always respected him for his friendship thru the years. Rest in peace Kirby (Forever a Forest Park Trojan)
