Malcolm Dow

Malcolm Lindsey Dow died peacefully at home on January 3, 2018 following many health problems.

He was born on August 14, 1928, in Carmona, Texas. His parents were James Pete Dow and Linnie Inez Whitter.

Malcolm attended schools at Carmona and Corrigan, Texas, and he graduated at age 15. Malcolm obtained a BS degree from Sam Houston University in 1949. He went on to attend the University of Houston, where he obtained his Master’s degree in Education. In 1971, he attended McNeese State University and completed the Educations Specialist Degree in Counseling and Guidance.

He started his teaching career at Kountze ISD and worked there from 1949 until 1963 as a teacher, coach, and part time counselor. Malcolm obtained a position at Nederland ISD in 1963 and was the head counselor in the Guidance Department until he retired in 1986 with thirty-seven years of experience in education.

Malcolm married Lynda Mensing Bateman on November 19, 1984.

After retiring, he began a lifelong love affair with genealogy. Malcolm also decided to return to Lamar, and obtained a certificate in computer repair. He then worked for Advantage Appliance from 1987 to 1988.

He began traveling shortly after he married Lynda. They enjoyed their many travels from the East coast to the West coast and Alaska. Their trips involved campong out in the back of a small pickup.

He was pleased to learn that his family is certified as descendants of James Taylor White. He completed several books of genealogy, which he left to Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research Library in Houston.

One of his greatest joys has been his son, Michael Lindsey Dow. An even greater joy happened when he became Paw Paw to Nicole Brianna Dow and then to Nathan Mitchell Dow. He finally understood what it meant to be a grandparent.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lynda; son, Michael; daughter, Lydia Dockens; grandchildren, Nicole Dow, Nathan Dow, and Matthew Hawkins; great-grandsons, Reed and Reece Hawkins; sister, Patsy Slusher; and many nieces and nephews.

Malcolm did not wish to have a formal funeral. His cremation arrangements were handled through Broussard’s Crematorium, under the direction of Broussard’s, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Compassion Hospice and Nurse Leah Graffagnino. Christus St. Elizabeth Congestive Heart Failure Clinic also provided excellent care.

Memorial contributions for Mr. Dow may be made to Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research Library, 5300 Caroline Street, Houston, Texas 77004.
