Margaret Hancock

July 4, 1940 - December 23, 2018

Margaret Cucancic Hancock (Mrs. Don Hancock) was born July 4, 1940, and passed away on December 23, 2018. She was the daughter and oldest child of Emson and Louise Cucancic. She decided to make her arrival a few weeks early and was delivered at home by her grandmother, Lee Cucancic, while they were waiting for the local doctor to arrive. This resulted in a lifelong closeness between Margaret and her grandmother, and contributed to Margaret’s decision to go into nursing, specializing in care of the elderly.

Margaret attended Temple Springs Elementary and Kirbyville High School. She later attended Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, receiving her BSN with honors. She accomplished this while being a wife and mother of three and working full time as an LVN.   She loved being a Registered Nurse and worked in several hospitals and nursing homes before starting her own Assisted Living business, Maggie’s House, which she operated for a number of years. She always said running Maggie’s House was the highlight of her career. Taking caring for others was her passion.

Margaret was married to Don Hancock for 52 years. They had three children: Mike, Sara Jane, and Sally Ann. They made their home in the Golden Triangle, living in Nederland and Beaumont. She was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church.

While nursing was her first passion, Margaret loved gardening, and had a natural affinity for growing any plant. She grew beautiful flowers, fruits and vegetables and loved sharing them with her friends and neighbors. Her ‘green thumb’ was on full display when she showed off the fruit trees she grew in her backyard, including oranges, lemons and figs. She loved sitting on her patio, just taking in the view of her back yard, including her flowers, the trees, birds, squirrels, raccoons, etc. That was the favorite part of her day.

Margaret is survived by her husband; Don Hancock; children, Mike Hancock (Rosie) and Sara Jane Hancock (Fareed); her grandchildren, Summer Mouton (Troy) and Chad Hancock; great-granddaughter, Railey Thomas; siblings, Janell Keeling (Jim) of Billings, Montana; James Cucancic of Houston; Gail Jenkins (James) of Brenham; Ray Cucancic (Sheila) of Huntsville; and Dale Cucancic (Leca) of Kirbyville.

She is preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Sally Ann Hancock.

A gathering of Mrs. Hancock’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, December 28, 2018, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. Her funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 29, 2018, at Broussard’s. Her cremation arrangements were handled through Broussard’s Crematorium. A graveside service will be held at Memory Gardens of Jefferson County, Nederland, at a later date, where she will be laid to rest next to her mother (Louise Cucancic) and daughter (Sally Ann Hancock). Honorary Pallbearers will be The Boulevard Boys.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Humane Society of Southeast Texas, P.O. Box 1629, Beaumont, Texas 77704; the ASPCA, P.O. Box 96929, Washington, D.C. 20090-6929; or a charity of your choice.

Margaret and I were best friends from the first grade at Temple Springs Elementary School through Lamar University and later in Beaumont. I will miss her quick wit and many laughs.
