Martin Carey, Jr.

February 20, 1941 - November 22, 2019

Martin Francis Carey, Jr., 78, of Nederland, died Friday, November 22, 2019. He was born on February 20, 1941, in Port Arthur, to Bernice Marie Dekerlegand Carey and Martin Francis Carey, Sr.

Martin grew up in Groves Texas. He attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School and graduated from Bishop Byrne High School in 1959. He went on to serve in the United States Air Force for three years and then joined the Army National Guard, retiring after twenty years, while simultaneously working at Eastman Kodak for twenty-five years. Serving in the military and working full-time at Eastman Kodak kept Martin busy, but he still found time to coach his three sons and several grandsons in Junior League Football. His volunteer coaching tenure continued for thirty plus years. Many of those years were spent coaching even though none of his children or grandchildren were playing.

After retiring from Eastman Kodak, Martin continued his mission of retiring from jobs by going to work and then retire from the Texas State Prison System. But wait there’s more….after retiring from the prison system, he worked at Securitas guarding gates at Huntsman for six plus years.

When Martin wasn’t working or coaching football, he loved to go hunting and fishing with his sons and grandsons. He also, loved to go camping, teaching his children to respect the outdoors. Martin always loved laughing and playing pranks. We don’t have room to list all of his pranks here, but if you were recipients of one of his many pranks I am sure you are smiling right now. He was called the Master of Pranks by some who thought they could get one over on him, but quickly learned he could always top them.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Carey, of Nederland; children, Glenda Sherman and her husband, Tommy, of Port Neches; Brenda Mendoza and her husband, Matt, of Port Neches; Shane Carey and his wife, Teresa, of Nederland; and Daniel Carey and his wife, Rachael, of Bridge City; daughter-in-law, Carla Carey, of Bryan; grandchildren, Cody Sherman and his wife, Heather; Jessi Butler and her husband, Caleb; Lindsay Mendez and her husband, Pete; Holly Domino and her husband, Brian; Jacob Mendoza and his wife, Staci; Michael Carey; Ethan Carey; Catherine Carey; and Emily Shultz and her husband, Austin; thirteen great-grandchildren; siblings, Frances Bienvenue; Catherine Payne; Linda Doodeheefver; and Donald Carey.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and son, Shawn Carey.

A gathering of Mr. Carey’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary recited at 6:00 p.m., Monday, November 25, 2019, at Broussard’s, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 211 Hardy Avenue, Nederland, Texas 77627, with his interment to follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park, Port Neches.
