Mary Jo Canizaro

January 1, 1925 - November 15, 2018

Mary Jo Canizaro, 93, of Beaumont, died Thursday, November 15, 2018, at Harbor Hospice, Beaumont. She was born on January 1, 1925, in Dallas, to Jennie Genero and Angelo Chirafis. She was a retired secretary from the Catholic Diocese of Beaumont, having worked at St. Joseph Catholic Church, and later became the first secretary at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church.

Mary Jo was a cheerleader in junior high and continued to cheer on her children and grandchildren throughout her life. She enjoyed watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune with her son every afternoon and going on cruises with her family and friends. Everyone loved celebrating the holidays at her home because she wanted it to be the perfect gathering for her family and friends. Mary Jo opened her home to have all the cast parties from Lamar University while her kids were in college. She was an excellent seamstress and made clothes that looked like they were off the rack.

She is survived by her son, Vincent J. Canizaro, Jr., of Beaumont; daughter, Jodie Patnod, of Friendswood; granddaughter, Brittany Gentry and her husband, Joshua; and great-grandchildren, Shelby Gentry, Jakob Gentry, and Jared Gentry, all of Houston.

Mary Jo is preceded in death by her husband, Vincent Canizaro, Sr.; sisters, Annette Danna and Rosenell Seymour; brothers, Louis Chirafis, John Chirafis, Kelly Chirafis, and Sam Chirafis; and parents, Jennie and Angelo Chirafis.

A gathering of Mrs. Canizaro’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., with her Rosary recited at 6:30 p.m., Monday, November 19, 2018, at Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 20, 2018, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1115 Orange Avenue, Beaumont, with her interment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Beaumont.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105; Harbor Hospice, 2450 North Major Drive Beaumont, Texas 77713; or to The University of MD Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, Texas 77210-4486.

The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth, Dubuis Hospital of Beaumont, and Harbor Hospice.

Mary Ann (Chimeno) Montalbano

To The Canizaro Family, My deepest sympathy and condolences go out to each of you during this period of transition. Aunt Jo was one of the most beautiful, loving and caring persons I know. I have many fond memories of her that date back to when I was a child. I feel she touched the lives of so many people in a very special way. I recall her always having a smile on her face. May the Peace of God be with each of you at this time and in the days ahead and may you find comfort in knowing your precious mother is now resting peacefully in the Loving Arms of Our Heavenly Father with His eternal rays shining brightly upon her and the warmth of His Loving Arms embracing her peacefully. With love, Mary Ann

On behalf of the Frank R and Mary Danna Scalia family of Monroe, Louisiana, I would like to extend our sincerest sympathy. Though Mary Jo was ten years older than I, I remember her well. Her sister Annette was my aunt, married to my moms brother Anthony, and her brother Johnny was my uncle, married to my moms sister Nina..

To the Family: Very sorry for your loss. It is at a time like this that we can turn to the promises found at Isaiah 33:24 and John 5:25 to find comfort, strength and hope. We long to see their fulfillment soon.
