Mary Jo Johnson

Mary Jo Johnson, 78, of Sour Lake, died Thursday, March 2, 2017. She was born on May 11, 1938, in Beaumont, to Neamona Rogers Hampshire and Leon Hampshire, and had been a longtime resident of Sour Lake.  Mary Jo enjoyed playing bingo, poker and going dancing. She was a great cook, Mary Jo‘s favorites were Gumbo and Pineapple Upside Down Cake.

Mary Jo is survived by her children, Frank Snider and his wife, Leslie; and Nell Carrell, all of Sour Lake; Laura Purcell and her husband David, of Salem, Illinois; Julian Roth and her husband, David, of LeMesa, California; and Lobitz Savoy, Jr., of Lufkin; twenty-one grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Janiese, of Sour Lake; and longtime friend, Kimmie Hatcher.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Neamona and Leon Hampshire; her husband, Alvin C. Johnson; and great-granddaughter, Alyssa Massey.

A gathering of Mrs. Johnson’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Sunday, March 5, 2017, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. Her funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 6, 2017, at Broussard’s, with her graveside service to follow at 12:00 p.m., at Restlawn Memorial Park, 2725 North Main Street, Vidor.
