RIchard E. Campbell, Sr.

December 16, 1934 - January 20, 2021

Richard Elbert Campbell, Senior, passed away on January 20, 2021.  He was born on December 16, 1934 in Crescent, Oklahoma.  He attended Oklahoma State University where he intended to study architectural engineering.  Instead, he left school before completing his degree to go to work to support his wife, Mildred Youngberg Campbell, and a growing family.  The young couple married on January 23, 1955 and had their first child in December of that year.  Richard spent years working in sales. A large majority of his career was for Hostess Cake and Pepsi in Texas, then left Pepsi to become a sales manager for Coca Cola in Texas and Florida.  He finally retired from Coca Cola in 1996.

He served his Country, receiving an Honorable Discharge from the US Army Reserves in 1962, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant.  He loved reading Louis L’Amour novels and coaching Little League baseball.  Until the day Richard died, he would often recall the names and batting averages of the players he coached and the young men he taught to play the game.

Richard’s greatest joy, however, was bragging about his children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren.  He leaves behind an extended family that stretches from Seattle, Washington, to Atlanta, Georgia.  He is survived by his sister, Carolyn Jacobs of Washington; his daughter, Melody Sanders of Fort Worth, Texas; and his sons, Richard Campbell, Jr. of The Colony, Texas; Ron Campbell of Beaumont, Texas; and Rob Campbell of Appleton, Wisconsin, their spouses and all those grandchildren and great-grandchildren he loved to brag so much about.

Richard is joining his parents, Herbert and Opal Campbell; his brother, Laddie Campbell; his wife, Millie Campbell; his youngest daughter, Virginia Dawn Keith; and his great-grandson, Liam, in the heavenly hereafter along with many other friends and family.

Louis L’Amour wrote “No memory is ever alone, it’s at the end of a trail of memories, a dozen trails that each have their own associations.”  Richard Campbell lived a life full of memories, memories associated with his family, his Country, and the communities he lived in and served.  He will be missed but he will never be forgotten.

A memorial service for Mr. Campbell will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 6, 2021, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. His cremation arrangements were handled through Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont.

I know you and Aunt Mildred are smiling down on us.

Steve Sanders

You told me about your experiences as a boy during World War II - getting to ride in the noses of B-25s when they were being taxied to test the engines. You said you always wanted to finally get to fly in one of those Mitchells. Roaring over the countryside, trees and houses and people flashing by outside that plexiglass nose. Well, Richard, your B-25 has finally left the ground. May you fly high and fast and land in the arms of Millie and Dawn. Farewell. See you down the road. Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep Like the setting sun on a dusty plain, like the lingering man who travels on – he has so many promises to keep – it’s time for me to lay me down to sleep. The scissor-tailed flycatcher wends her way back to her comfortable nest, pulling her children closer to her breast, it’s time for me to lay me down to rest. Shadows pool around the redbud, so deep, across Oklahoma the night winds sweep, a prayer rises to God, my soul to keep, the time has come to lay me down to sleep.
