My heart is mourning for the loss of a man that I have had the privilege to know for 24 years. A man that for the last 4 years sacrificed time with his family to come to Mansfield, Louisiana and build not 1 but 2 homes on my property. This is a man that built fences, repaired fences, hung gates, re-roofed & re-braced all of our old vintage barns, and built what proved to be his final accomplishment a brand new cattle lot with new cross ties and new rough-cut oak lumber, This is a man that built and repaired so many things over the last 4 years it would be hard to name them all. Each week he would make the 3 hour drive to Mansfield and work on our property then return to Silsbee at the end of the week. He did this same routine for 4 years. This is also a man that over the years I became so dependent on. Mr. Hukill, as I called him, was many things to me. He was a friend, a father figure, a person who would listen to all my problems, a person that I was constantly seeking advice from. This is a person that played Santa Claus to my children. A person that always seemed to bail me out when I tore something up. I can never remember a time that he was ever late to work, he was one of the most punctual persons I have ever met. He not only was honest and trustworthy he was extremely patient which was a great asset to have in working for me. I can honestly say that over the last 10 years almost any decision I had to make, was not made until I got his opinion. So how did I first meet Ron Hukill, I moved to Silsbee in August of 1993 when I was hired by Evadale ISD. I rented a home on 121 Cravens Drive by the old Jr. High and old Football Stadium. Mr. Hukill was the man that was sent by the landlord anytime something did not work correctly. It was during the next 6 years of renting this home that I got to know him. I grew to value his opinion, his knowledge and admire his patience with me. In 1999 my wife and I decided to buy a home, we took Mr. Hukill with us to every home that we were interested in. Once we decided on 145 Laurie Lane, Mr. Hukill became our contractor. The property had a house, but nothing else except trees. Within a few months we had a garage, a carport with a breezeway connecting to the house, a large workshop, a concrete driveway, sidewalks, and large concrete parking areas. Each summer at the end of the school year, I would plan a project for the property and Mr. Hukill would complete the project. Due to my father’s health, I had to retire from teaching and coaching. For 3 years I commuted from Silsbee to Mansfield on a weekly basis, just like Mr. Hukill. Eventually I had to move permanently to Mansfield. In August of 2013 Mr. Hukill began working in Mansfield in what was suppose to be a 3 month project, but that 3 months turned in to 4 years. I use to tell Mr. Hukill all the time, you might be a contractor to some, you might be a carpenter to others, and you might be a cattle ranch manager to those in the past but to Mark Thigpen you are an expert in tying knots. He had a gift of being able to tie all kind of knots with a rope. I always was in awe of how he talented he was with a rope in his hand. Me and my wife, Lisa are forever thankful for all he did for our family. We are grateful for the impact that he had on our lives. We are indebted to him for all he did over the last 24 years for us. We will miss him dearly, but his memory will live on in our hearts and minds. May GOD bless the family and give them strength. Mark Thigpen
