Ruth Turner

October 14, 1917 - July 3, 2018

LaVada Ruth Landrum Turner, 100 years and 9 months old, passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2018. She was born on October 14, 1917, in Cunningham, to LaVada “Mama Vade” Bell Landrum and Nicholas Hay “Papa Hay” Landrum.

Ruth was an independent, hard worker. She did not retire until she was about 75. Ruth owned and ran a drive-in grocery in Beaumont for many years. She was picking cotton about the age of 5-7. Ruth was employed by a local grocery store, in the meat department. During the war, she was a welder at Bethlehem Steel. After retiring, she lived near her son David, in Crystal Beach, moving back to Beaumont after Hurricane Ike. For the last six years, Ruth has been a resident at Kountze Nursing Home, where she passed away.

Survivors include her sons, Doyle Turner and his wife, Peggy, of Beaumont; and David Turner and his wife, Doris, of Lumberton; sister-in-law, Myrtle Landrum, of Paris; granddaughters, Brenda Turner, Belinda Troquille, Cyndi Turner, all of Beaumont, and Heather Turner, of Houston; and step-grandson, Bill Cariker and his wife, Debbie, of Crockett; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; three sisters; grandson, Greg Turner; and her ex-husband, Earl Lee Turner.

Ruth was cremated. Her ashes will remain with the family until a later, when a final decision for destination will be made. A private family committal was held at Broussard’s Crematorium, under the direction of Broussard’s, 530 West Monroe, Kountze.
