Vicki Stevens

November 20, 1954 - June 14, 2019

Vicki Lee Westmoreland Stevens was born in Port Arthur, Texas, to Joyce Reid Flowers and Kenneth Westmoreland on November 20, 1954. She was raised by her grandparents, Elmer and Edwina Reid. In 1973, she graduated from Sharpstown High School, where she was on the Apollo Queens Dance Team and head cheerleader of the cheer squad. She attended Stephen F. Austin State University, filling her time with cheerleading and studying to become a teacher. It was at SFA where she met the love of her life, Lyn Stevens. On December 18, 1976, Lyn and Vicki were married in Port Arthur, Texas. From 1978-1980, she supported her new husband while he studied to become a lawyer at Baylor Law School in Waco, Texas. She eventually graduated from Lamar University in 1982 with a BA in Education and minor in Dance.

Vicki loved to dance. She performed in several ballets including: Cinderella, Oklahoma, Rodeo, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and many many more. Before having children, Vicki spent her time raising several pets—including her new mastiff puppy, Sheba, and her cat Lulu. She discovered her love for animals at a young age while visiting her grandfather’s farm in Leesville, Louisiana. Above all, Vicki loved dogs. She raised several mastiffs—Sheba, George, and Gracie—and several Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs or “Swissy’s”—Jesse and Shepherd.

Vicki’s life revolved around her husband and four daughters—Phoebe, Chloe, Priscilla, and Naomi. She enjoyed taking them to dance classes, tumbling classes, and cheerleading. In 2008, she became the head cheer coach for Legacy Christian Academy. Teaching, encouraging, and loving her cheerleaders brought her great joy. She, likewise, touched many younger generations of cheerleaders through her work as the Spirit Line Coordinator. Her focus in both cheerleading and Spirit Line was the spiritual growth and encouragement of the young girls.

Vicki ran with endurance every race that was set in front of her, quite literally. She was an avid runner having run more than five half marathons and many more 10k and 5k races. In fact, she was so resilient and determined that she ran her last half marathon with a broken foot in a boot.

Vicki loved Christ. She dedicated each of her children to the Lord and committed her life to raising her daughters in a manner pleasing to God. In every way, Vicki radiated Christ, always encouraging, always loving, and always uplifting.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond “Lyn” Stevens; daughters, Phoebe Dominy and her husband, Drake; Chloe Sease and her husband, Jeff; Priscilla Kamphuis and her husband, Kody; and Naomi Stevens; mother, Joyce Reid Flowers; cousins, Sherrie Scott and Paula Scott Portacci; and numerous other loving cousins.

Vicki is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, who raised her, Edwina and Elmer Reed; father, Kenneth Westmoreland; brother, Max Westmoreland; and mother and father-in-law, Emma “Mackie” and Melvin Stevens.

A gathering of Mrs. Stevens’ family and friends will begin at 12:00 p.m., with her funeral service at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 20, 2019, at Calvary Baptist Church, 3650 Dowlen Road, Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A family committal will be at Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Humane Society of Southeast Texas, P.O. Box 1629, Beaumont, Texas 77704.

Lyn --I was shocked to hear this news in the last 2 days--I am so sorry for your loss--Vicki was always there for you and the girls--I remember seeing her not too long ago at a football game as she was heading up the cheerleaders at Legacy--we also had one cheering for All Saints and West Brook and we spoke briefly about raising children and all the fun and difficulties that come with that--she was always so calm and ready to deal with anything. I know she will be in Heaven getting it already for all of us one day with the same calmness and love she had for you and the girls Lynn--Peace be with you and may God's grace and love warm all of your hearts knowing of what a wonderful life she had and what a loving mother and wife she was to all of you. MItch.
