Virgil James Roberts

November 27, 1920 - May 30, 2020

Virgil J. Roberts, 99, of Beaumont, died Saturday, May 30, 2020, at Brookdale Dowlen Oaks, Beaumont. He was born November 27, 1920, to Belle Morris Roberts and Luther J. Roberts. He was Papaw and Uncle Virgil by all of his family and family of heart.

He was a combat veteran of World War II. Virgil worked at Magnolia Refinery, that became Mobiloil, retiring after forty-two years of service. He also taught machine shop at what is now LIT.

Virgil was an avid hunter and fisherman and was also a self-taught wood carver.

He is survived by his daughter, Shirley Nantz and her husband, William, of Beaumont; grandchildren, James Nantz, of Vidor; Angelia McLendon, of Houston; and Jarrod McLendon and his wife, Cindy, of Nederland; great-grandchildren, Jarec McLendon and Madison Dubois, both of Nederland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Virgil is preceded in death by his wife, of seventy-eight years, Hazel Roberts; and daughter, Karen McLendon LeGros.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Brookdale Assisted Living and Texas Home Health Hospice. They cared for him like family. Also, a special thanks goes out to Beaumont Adult Medicine.

A graveside service for Mr. Roberts will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 5, 2020, at Magnolia Cemetery, 2291 Pine Street, Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. Please observe social distancing guidelines.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, 5290 North Caldwood Drive, Beaumont, Texas 77707 or to an organization of one’s choice.

He was a precious member of our Congress St. "family"....part of the Mobil carpools, Giles PTA, good neighbor, lifelong friend, etc, etc. The Willis family cherished the relationship they had with Virgil & Hazel and their girls. I loved his nickname for me - - "Blondie". He will be missed.

Shirley, Dad was a mess and a spoiled on at that but we all know that Mom made his that way. . He was a good person that loved Mom. He did not want to be her without her. Mine and Carols prayers go out to you. Cathy and Carol
