WJ Everett III
WJ Everett III, 57, of Winnie, died Sunday, December 16, 2018. He was born to Dixie Lea Nichols and WJ Everett, Jr., on October 2, 1961, in Bryan, Texas.
WJ is from pioneer Texas stock. His ancestors were either lawmen or ranchers. WJ’s great grandfather was named Wiley James and served as sheriff of Llano County over a hundred years ago. The next generation became “modernized” and dropped the Wiley James in lieu of just using WJ Everett. WJ Everett, Sr was a rancher. WJ Everett, Jr was a Chief Deputy for Brazos County, Texas, and later started the Private Investigation firm named WJ Everett and Associates.
WJ Everett III became both a rancher and a private investigator. His bravery was seen as first a bull rider for over twenty years and later as he galloped over fences in Ireland, Virginia, and Texas. An international traveler and romantic, he proposed marriage to Kelley Colleen Kays in a castle in Ireland. Together they made their farm Falconwood an equestrian center for the breeding of sport horses and riding in the sport of Eventing, also known as the triathlon for the horse.
WJ also loved art, movies, and athleticism. He acted in several movies including “A Woman of Independent Means”, with Sally Fields and “The Evening Star”. WJ painted in the style of modern abstract and impressionism. He was always the first person at the gym in the wee hours of the morning. Motocross was another hobby that filled his need for adrenalin!
WJ was a great listener, a nurturer and had a bounty of close friends. His greatest love was animals – all kinds. He was a cat whisperer, dog spoiler, and loved his ducks, geese, chickens, and peacocks. The horses he bred and raised will carry on his love of riding. This year WJ and his wife, veterinarian Kelley Kays, started Beaumont Pets Alive, a nonprofit dedicated to saving the lives of dogs and cats. Over nine hundred animals have been saved in 2018, the first year of operation.
Survivors include his wife, Kelley Kays, D.V.M., of Winnie; sister, Vickie Everett Tway and her husband, William J. Tway, Jr., of Houston; niece, Isabella Lea Tway, of Houston; and aunt, Doris Louvayne Everett Herzog, of Bryan.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
A funeral service for Mr. Everett will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 22, 2018, at Broussard’s, 134 West Buccaneer Drive, Winnie, with a reception to follow at Falconwood Equestrian Center, 46718 I-10, Winnie. His committal will be held at Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont.

Dear Kelley: My entire family is devastated by the news of J’s passing. We have lost yet another member of our family. Please accept my deepest condolences. I last saw J and you at Dave’s funeral 6 1/2 months ago. I know how very busy you two are, and to have taken the time to come to Dave’s funeral was so very much appreciated. I know Dave is giving J a grand tour of heaven. Without a doubt, WJ Everett III, or “Bubba” to me; was a fine example of who we should all strive to be while on this earth. He was kind, loyal, moral, smart, handsome and humble, and a lover of animals. A role model for all who were privileged to know him. I hauled and rode bulls with Bubba back in the early 90s. He would bring his video equipment and we would take turns videoing each other rides and other friends as well. I remember visiting him in the Hogg building in down town Houston. My wife at the time and I had dinner with him and I went to put the dirty dishes in the dishwasher but it was full of papers. He said that was is filing cabinet. Please don't turn it on. Bubba was always a nice person. He was just a good natured cowboy. I'm really sad to hear of his passing. So many memories of J and his calm, warm voice saying "y'all come on over. any time. Come ride, come eat with us, Just come on." and knowing he meant it. Kelley, I'm am shocked and saddened to hear about J. His live life to the fullest every day, His kindness and love for you, his friends, the horses and willingness to jump at any adventure (and there were many) made him so special. One of my fondest memories happened when we first met you and J at the Meadow Creek Bruce Davidson Sr. clinic. You had injured a knee and J with very little jumping experience at that time took your ride. To the delight of Bruce and the rest of us, he rode with a bronco style jumping that red table with one arm up into the air as any bull rider would. Big smile on his face and hearty laughs from Mr. Davidson Sr. and I believe became the beginning of a fabulous friendship with one of the best in the Eventing world. Kelly, I'm so sad to hear the news about Bubbas passing. Everyone captured his true spirit and humble personality in the comments. I knew him through the years by his good friend, and my brother, Ronnie Saathoff. They had some fun adventures together, and both loved bullriding , motorcycles and just good friends that enjoyed the same adventures in life! I just loved his warm and big heart, boyish charm and his kindness that shined through. My brother is so saddened at the loss of one of his best friends. When he told me the news, we both had a good cry then we chuckled at Bubba the cat wisperer, who paid cat support to his ex wife! He sure loved animals and I know he loved you as well. God bless you!
