Alma Lee Rollins Kirby, 89, of Nederland, Texas went to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, with her loving family and church friends by her side. Alma was a firm believer in God and was comforted by her strong faith and the love of her family and friends. Alma was born on September 25, 1934, in Beaumont, Texas to Milton and Mary Rollins. She was a member of Triangle Baptist Church in Nederland where she played the piano and handbells and also donated her time to the church by helping with Vacation Bible School and with the flowerbed. Alma graduated from South Park High School and Lamar Tech. She met her husband, Donald W. Kirby at Pure Oil where she was a plant secretary. She left the workforce to raise her family. Martin Eddie LaFleur, 77, of Groves, died Monday, March 25, 2024, at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas. He was born February 28, 1947, in Port Arthur, to Ollie Marie Vaughn Prince and Whitney “Pop” Prince. Survivors include his wife, Brenda LaFleur; brother, Robert LaFleur and wife, Suzanne; sister, Marie Babin; daughters, Anita Rogers and husband, Kevin; Kellie Powell and husband, Greg; and Glenda Davalos and husband, Stewart; six grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jane Allene Harvill Brackin, 97, of Nederland, made her journey home peacefully on March 24, 2024, while surrounded by her loved ones. She was born April 29, 1926, in Nederland, to Lola Ota Defee Harvill and Louis Marion Harvill. She was a lifelong and faithful member of First Baptist Church of Nederland, Texas. Jane was a member of the Silvertone Choir who performed for their church and community. She belonged to a Bible Study group of women where she served as President, Vice President, and Secretary. Jane began volunteering as a ‘Pink Lady’ for Mid Jefferson Hospital and continued as an Auxiliary Volunteer for the Southeast Texas Medical Center where she was honored as Auxiliarist of the Year. Delwin Woodrow Chance, 82, of Orange, died Wednesday, March 20, 2024. He was born July 20, 1941, in Louisiana, to Gennie Vie Brown Chance and Henry Woodrow Chance. Survivors include his wife, Janice Romero Chance; children, Malandi Reed and husband, Samuel, and Bruce Chance; grandchildren, Emily Erway, and her fiancé, Bryson Bourgeois, Ayden Chance, and Destin Chance; and great-grandchild, Elliot Bourgeois. Charles H. Poskey passed away peacefully at his home, Wednesday, March 20, 2024. Charles was born May 31, 1935, in Humble, Texas, to Albert Harmon and Louise Poskey. The family moved in 1945 to Port Neches. He graduated from Port Neches – Groves High School, in 1953. Charles attended Lamar University and served in the United States Army where he was based in Germany. He began his career at Jefferson Chemical Company, now Texaco, in Port Neches, in 1960. After 20 years, he retired and became an operations consultant. He worked for several companies overseas and retired in 2000. For several years, he enjoyed raising cattle at his ranch in Larue, Texas. On January 10, 1960, he married Oralia “Lolly” Mendez and had one son, Michael A. Poskey. Our beautiful mother, Mary Syble Simon, 91, of Nederland, Texas passed away on March 19, 2024. Syble was born on March 12,1933 to Elise Luquette and Evert Fournier in Bayou Salle, Louisiana and attended school in Franklin and Abbeville, Louisiana. Mom’s vocation and joy in life was that of wife, mama, grandma, great-grandma, and great-great-grandma to the 104 blessings she called family. She was a top-notch homemaker exemplifying the Proverbs 31 woman. As she tended her home for 11, she was frugal, hardworking, creative, innovative, a gifted seamstress, the best Cajun cook and baker, good old remedy nurse, loving advocate for the needs of her family, a devoted sports fan for her children and grandchildren, the greatest example of a God-fearing woman and prayer warrior, as well as forming special life-long friendships with her neighbors on Avenue B, where she resided for 64 years. James “Jimmy” Leo Cole, Sr., 86, of LaBelle, died Monday, March 18, 2024. He was born July 27, 1937, in Picayune, Mississippi, to Violet Bertha Cole and Ernest Samuel Cole. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Fannett, and a member of the Knights of Columbus CO 6763 also in Fannett. Working in construction all his life, he was a Master Plumber, a carpenter, and a craftsman of many trades. He utilized his talents in building homes for low-income families through a project of Savannah Housing. Richard Glenn Hopkins, Sr., 70, of Nederland, died Wednesday, March 13, 2024. He was born September 28, 1953, in Port Arthur, to JoAnn Comeaux Hopkins and Henry James Hopkins. Richard loved classic cars, motorcycles, and the Dallas Cowboys. Juan J. Garcia, 100, of Nederland, died Thursday, March 7, 2024. He was born April 23, 1923, in Rio Grande City, to Herlinda Gonzales Garcia and Francisco Garcia. Juan married the love of his life, Delores, on December 17, 1950, in Port Arthur. He retired from Port Iron Supply with forty-three years of service as chief accountant manager. He was also a manager of Jefferson City Shopping Center for twenty years. Ruthie Mae (Goff) Miller was promoted to a heavenly angel at age 83 on Saturday, March 2 at 9:44 p.m. surrounded by her loving family. Ruthie was born to James & Dorothy (Yarbrough) Goff on October 28, 1940, in Memphis, TN. After moving around with her family for several years, she landed in Gonzales, LA. While living in Gonzales, she attended a church youth camp where she met the love of her life, her prince, David Miller. Derron Rogers, 49, of Nederland, Texas, peacefully passed away on March 2nd, 2024. Derron was born on June 4th, 1974, to Bert Sr. and Sandra Rogers in Beaumont, Texas. Derron lived a joyful childhood in Nederland, Texas, enjoying his life with his parents, friends, and his community. He spent most of his adolescent years enjoying his time playing soccer with the Blackhawks Soccer Team and preparing to be the next Rick Springfield. Claude Vincent Dwyer, Jr., 80, of Nederland, died Monday, February 19, 2024. Claude was born September 8, 1943, Wednesday morning at 4:56 a.m., in Providence Hospital in Mobile, Alabama. In his senior year, he won the prettiest baby picture contest at Thomas Jefferson. He was the king at his Mardi Gras preschool carnival but refused to walk down the aisle with the queen. Claude made his first communion after getting his white suite dirty from chasing a cat under the house. He was the catcher on his baseball team, and he helped coach for a few years. He enjoyed going hunting in the cold marsh with his friends and also loved fishing. Tressie Marie Cloar Shiflet, 94, of Groves, went home to our Heavenly Father on February 17, 2024. She was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on April 15, 1929. She was adopted at four months of age in Greenville, Texas by her parents Roy and Tressie Cloar. When she was in the second grade her family moved to Port Arthur, Texas. She attended Proctor Street Church of Christ, Nederland Church of Christ, Park Central Church of Christ. In Tressie’s younger years, she enjoyed her time at the family camp on Cow Bayou, playing the flute in The Thomas Jefferson Maroon and Gold Band, playing the piano. She married Ralph Shiflet, September 19, 1949 and started a family. Our dearest André Deon van Aswegen (IRON MAN), 18, left us on February 16th, 2024, when he gained his Angel wings. André was born December 17, 2005, in Vredenburg, South Africa. André was a student at Nederland High School and part of the Band and Theater. He enjoyed life to the fullest and was an inspiration to so many people. His biggest obstacle was his battle with Metastatic Ewing Sarcoma cancer, and he fought very hard until the end. André was grateful and blessed with all the support he received from so many people. He truly was our IRON MAN. He always had the most beautiful smile when meeting people. Raymond James Thompson, 87, of Nederland, died Sunday, February 4, 2024. He was born on August 11, 1936, in Port Arthur, to Annie Marie Nunez and Jack Daniel Thompson. Raymond worked as an insulator for over 50 years and enjoyed every day of it. He worked with Asbestos Workers local #22. He also enjoyed his extensive collection of western and outlaw movies. Going on trips to San Antonio with his family is what he enjoyed most. Captain James O. “Jim” Meeks of Nederland, Texas, went to be with the Lord on February 4, 2024, at the age of 95. Captain Meeks was born January 18, 1929, in Akron, Ohio into a family of three brothers and two sisters. The family moved to Hampton, Georgia where he graduated from Hampton High School. After graduation, he went to Paris Island, South Carolina and joined the United States Marines where he served one tour of duty. At the age of 21, he joined the Masonic Lodge and served a year in the National Guard. In 1947, Jim joined the Merchant Marines. It was his love of water and his thirst for knowledge that led him to the maritime industry – which would ultimately become his lifetime passion. Louise Guernsey, 97, of Nederland, passed away peacefully in the early morning of Monday, January 22, 2024. She was born on March 2, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York, to Stephen Putorte and Mildred Morazzo Putorte. She grew up and through her school years, there in Brooklyn among her siblings and cousins, whom she greatly adored. During World War II, she contributed to the war effort by her work in a radio tube factory. At a Brooklyn subway stop she met her “knight in shining armor”, Louis, dressed in his impressive West Point Marine Academy uniform. They were married on August 6, 1957. After having their first child, Kenneth, they relocated to Port Arthur where Louis was employed “shipping out” on Texaco oil tankers. She was born August 19, 1933, in Beaumont, to Petronella Elizabeth Rauwerda Fowler and William Rayford Fowler. She leaves behind her husband of seventy-one great years, Bill Winn.
