Alice Louise Calloway

August 30, 1932 - June 27, 2022

Alice Louise Calloway, 89, of Silsbee, died Monday, June 27, 2022.  She was born on August 30, 1932, in Newton, to Bobbie Lee Williamson Drake and Francis Clyde Drake.

Mrs. Calloway’s Christian ministry began at a young age and continued throughout her life.  Her parents were ministers in the Assembly of God Church and as a child, she traveled with them through Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas spreading the word of God through evangelical teaching.   As a young adult, she attended Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, Texas.  While attending, she worked with the small struggling churches around the college by ministering in music and word.  After marriage she and her husband were involved with evangelistic and pastoral ministries for 35 years. She was a credentialed minister with the Assemblies of God in Springfield, MO.   Ministry was her passion and she ministered to the nurses and hospital staff that cared for her through her last days.

Mrs. Calloway was a life-long educator.  She began her education career at Silsbee ISD as a 3rd grade teacher in 1960.  She taught many different grade levels and subjects throughout her career and in many different districts.  After retirement, she returned to teaching for Kountze ISD in coordination with Hardin County Courthouse for JJAEP where she worked with troubled youth.  Many would not have received a high school diploma if not for the love, compassion, encouragement, and care Mrs. Calloway had for her students.  She made a life-long impact on her students and those students nominated her for the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers Award.

Survivors include her husband, Reverend Art Calloway; children, Fran Smith and her husband, Sonny, of Mauriceville and Ken Calloway and his wife, Kathy, of Silsbee; grandchildren, Daniel Houghton and his wife, Kelli, of Orange; Chris Houghton and his wife, Trina, of Warren; Justin Calloway and his wife, Megan, of Lumberton; and Kody Calloway of Houston; great-grandchildren, Emily Houghton, Mason Houghton, Kaitlyn Houghton, Caleb Houghton, Ethan Calloway, and Avery Calloway; and siblings, Ann Hollister of Lumberton; David Drake and his wife, Lana, of Silsbee; and Reverend Clyde Drake of Sealey.  She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Thomas Drake.

A gathering of Mrs. Calloway’s family and friends will begin at 10:00 a.m., with her funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 2, 2022, at First Assembly of God, 950 Highway 96 South, Silsbee, under the direction of Broussard’s, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee.  Her interment will follow at R.S.
