Amelie Mary Suberbielle Cobb

Amelie Mary Suberbielle Cobb, 84, died peacefully on Saturday, December 20, 2025 in Beaumont, Texas. She was born in Houston, Texas on July 1, 1941, to James Edward Suberbielle and Julia Mae Moffett Suberbielle. She spent her earliest years in Houston, and then moved to Jasper, Texas for most of her childhood. She spent much time at her grandparents’ farm in Jasper, helped care for her four younger siblings, and worked in her mother’s dress shop in Jasper. She graduated from Jasper High School in 1959, then attended the University of St. Thomas, the University of Houston, and Lamar University, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She thrived working in radio and television at both KTRH in Houston and KFDM in Beaumont.

In the spring of 1965, a friend set Amelie up on a blind date to the Neches River Festival with the young Beaumont lawyer, Howell Cobb. After a brief, whirlwind courtship, they were married on July 3, 1965. Together, they raised their six children in Beaumont. Coming from a large family of her own, Amelie knew the importance of creating a warm and welcoming home and gathering family and friends together as often as possible. Amelie was a fantastic cook and known for her signature dishes, including Oysters Amelie, crawfish étouffée, and her very potent rum cake.

Amelie strongly believed in the importance of serving her community. She held leadership and board of director positions in many local organizations including the Junior League of Beaumont, the Symphony League of Southeast Texas, the Beaumont Housing Authority, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, the Board of Regents of Lamar University, Catholic Charities, and the Magnolia Garden Club. She held national positions with the Garden Club of America and for many years was very active in local, state, and national politics. She held a deep faith and was a devoted parishioner of St. Anne Catholic Church. Through her community involvement, she developed many deep friendships that continued throughout her life. Amelie and Howell spent lots of time with their dear Beaumont friends across the country, from Magnolia Springs, Texas, to Castine, Maine.

Amelie was passionate about gardening and birding. She grew her own gorgeous, formal gardens at three different homes in Beaumont. She traveled the country as a horticulture judge for the Garden Club of America. Though she considered herself an amateur birder, she was an accomplished ornithologist who took any opportunity to travel and to add to her life list. She shared her love of gardens and birds with her friends, children, and her grandchildren, teaching even the littlest ones how to appreciate wildlife, identify a bird by its call, and trick the squirrels from getting into the bird feeders.

Perhaps most cherished by Amelie was her large family. She had twenty-five grandchildren and thirty-two great grandchildren, and over a dozen nieces and nephews. Amelie hosted many holidays and “Cobbfests” to share delicious food, lots of laughs, and a few front yard football games. Just the week before her death, nearly seventy members of her immediate family gathered with Amelie in her home to celebrate the engagement of a grandson and to welcome the newest member of the large Cobb family.

Amelie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of forty years, the Honorable Howell Cobb; and sons, Howell Cobb III and Thomas Hart Cobb.

She is survived by her daughters, Catherine Cook (David) of Beaumont; Mary Ann Walton (Ray) of Fredericksburg; and Caroline Ervin (Jimmy) of Washington, DC; son, John Cobb (Monica) of Beaumont; daughters-in-law, Bonnie Cobb and Meghan Cobb; her sister, Susie Paulea; and brothers, Jay Suberbielle (Brenda); Tom Suberbielle; and John Suberbielle; and her dear cousin, Gale Garrett Beauprez. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Andrew Cook (Courtney), Martha Cook Servos (Thomas), Matthew Cook (Chassis), Nicole Cobb Vogelwede (Steven), Natalie Cobb (Sigrid), James Cobb (FeiFei), Travis Cobb (Allison), Torrance Cobb Forgas (Matthew), Thomas Cobb (Amanda), Ben Walton (Bekah), Elizabeth Walton Knippa (Sky), Adam Walton (Jamie), Nathan Walton (Jaemi), Christopher Walton (Anne), Matthew Walton (Nicole), Sarah Grace Walton, Elizabeth Ervin Otto (Kevin), William Ervin, Emily Ervin, Olivia Cobb, Howell Cobb, Kate Cobb, Jackson Cobb, Georgia Cobb, Tucker Cobb; and her thirty-two“greats.”

A gathering of Amelie’s family and friends will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Friday, January 2, 2026, at Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 3, 2026, at St. Anne Catholic Church, 2715 Calder Avenue, Beaumont, with her interment to follow at Magnolia Cemetery, Beaumont.
