Betty Terrell Owens
Betty Jean Terrell Owens passed away surrounded by the love of her family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, leadership, and deep-rooted faith.
Betty was born to Doris Cotten Terrell and Douglas Charles Terrell of Tyler, Texas, who preceded her in death. She carried great pride in her Texas heritage and family history throughout her life.
On September 9, 1960, she married the love of her life, Russell Arlen Owens. Their marriage, built on enduring love and commitment, was one of her proudest blessings.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Russell; her brother, Gary Terrell and wife, Bonnie Terrell; her nephews, Eric and Sean Terrell; her children, David Owens and wife, Connie, Aimee Smith and husband, Glenn, and Jennifer Burke Neff; as well as six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to her life.
Betty dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her family and community. She served as a Campfire Girl Leader and Cub Scout Leader and was an active and influential member of the Parent Teacher Association, serving as President of Eugene Field Elementary, Bowie Middle School, and French High School. In recognition of her service, she was awarded an Honorary Life Membership in the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers in 1972.
Her leadership extended to her passion for history and heritage. She served as President of the Colonel George Moffett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, documenting thirteen approved ancestors. She also served as President of the Tejas Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century.
A lifetime member of the Church of Christ, Betty’s faith guided her life and her service to others.
She had a deep love for creative writing and genealogy research. Betty devoted countless hours to documenting family histories, collaborating with researchers, and traveling across Texas in search of ancestral records. She could often be found walking through historic cemeteries, piecing together stories of generations past. She believed in learning something new nearly every day.
Above all, Betty cherished her marriage of over six decades, raising her three children, celebrating her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and loving every dog that became part of the family.
Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured, the history she preserved, and the love she gave so freely.
