Bill Thompson

March 3, 1928 - July 24, 2024

Bill was born into humble surroundings in 1928. He was the first of two children, and he and his sister were raised in Houston. His father died while serving in the military when he was a young teenager leaving his mother to raise the two of them alone.

At 19, his life changed forever when God called him to preach. He responded with his whole heart giving himself unreservedly to the work of the ministry. While serving as the prayer captain for a college age retreat before the school year began, he asked the students to find a prayer partner for the duration of the retreat. Being a man of above average intelligence, he scanned the crowd and asked the prettiest girl to be his partner. It was not long until he set out to win her heart and eventually, she joined him in ministry as his wife and partner.

For 72 years they devoted themselves to the Lord’s work and each other. During those years, he earned a seminary degree, and they raised four boys while serving as pastor for numerous Baptist churches. His ministry was a of building a strong foundation through solid bible teaching. Eventually the Lord led him to Leon County, Texas where they lived out in the woods, and he served when needed (which was often) as interim pastor for most the churches in that area.

At 80, he and his beloved Patricia, moved to Beaumont to be near medical facilities and their son, Mark. They jumped into service in their local church, teaching and preaching where they had opportunity. He preached his last sermon at 90 years of age and then devoted himself to caring for his wife in her last years as her health declined.

The Lord came for her in November of 2022. Even though he missed her tremendously and yearned to be with her, he continued to serve the Lord as best he could by attending church, loving people and encouraging them any way he could. Though he became less able to go see people in person, he continued to minister through email by sending out newsletters up until a couple of months before his death.

On July 24, 2024, at about 12:30 a.m., the Lord finally came to take him home. His life and his work were complete, and he was able to hear his Lord and Savior say, “Well done thy good and faithful servant.”

Survivors include his sons, Stephen Thompson of Tucson, Arizona; Mark Thompson and his wife, Jeanette, of Beaumont, Texas; and Russell Thompson and his wife, Darla, of London, Texas; grandchildren, Zachary Thompson, Rebekah Rogers and her husband, Bryon; Alisha Thompson; Sarah Herod and her husband, Gabe; Joshua Thompson and his wife, Rochelle; and Jeffery Thompson and his wife, Kellie; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous church family members and friends through the years

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife of 72 years, Patricia Ann Thompson; son, David Thompson; and sister, Nancy Mullins.

Really miss Bro. Bill and Pat. They were part of our ss class and later just him, then he wasn’t able to come for health reasons. He was the “genuine article”. I have most of his weekly emails, first called Midweek Moments and later, The Best Of The Scribe . God bless all you, his family.

    Jeff & Carolyn Rash says:

    Debbie Wunsch says:

Brother Bill was my neighbor and friend. We would briefly visit early mornings when I walked my dog. He loved Jesus with all his heart and was such an encouragement to me to keep walking with the Lord. Mark, you were such a good son to your Dad. He knew he could depend on you.

Elizabeth Strahan & Bob & Kitty Weaver says:

Mark and Jeanette, thank you for being such loving caregivers. I know you have both taken on this role for Bill for several years. I’m really happy he’s united with his beloved wife Pat. He missed her so.
My Mom Kitty Weaver wanted me to also extend condolences to both of you.

    Skipper Schexsnayder says:

I am so sorry for your loss. Bro. Thompson was our Interim pastor in Buffalo twice while I served there. Both he and Mrs. Thompson were the finest examples of Christ to fashion a life after. I loved them both. I know they loved y’all, too. We will see them again. My thoughts and prayers with ya’ll. I know they are rejoicing in heaven being reunited.

    Gale Wilson says:

So sorry to hear about the passing of Brother Bill. He was a fine Christian man. My late husband, Pastor Lennie Wilson thought the world of him and went to him on many occasions for advice and encouragement. He is now with our Lord and his dear Pat. Much love and prayers to your family.
