Brenda Kay Nelson Lopez

August 1, 1955 - May 16, 2025

Brenda Kay Nelson Lopez, 69, of Lumberton, Texas, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2025, surrounded by the family she loved so deeply.

Born and raised in Beaumont, Brenda made a life of love, laughter, and service to others. She spent her career managing offices with grace and diligence, but her true joy was found in the time she gave so generously to her family and friends. Brenda was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, always present – whether cheering from the bleachers, sewing custom Halloween costumes by hand, or simply offering a listening ear.

She was a proud 1973 graduate of South Park High School where she was a member of the Sparkettes Drill Team. While in high school she patiently waited for her true love to return from his station in Germany. Shortly after Tommy returned they got married and began their life together, a life that was full of adventures. They had three of the most perfect children — self-proclaimed, of course.

As a woman of deep faith, Brenda said the rosary every night, even doubling down on that devotion after losing her son a few years ago. One of the things her loved ones admired most about her was that she never let a bad day keep her down. She’d just call her crew for a round of dominoes or a game of Liverpool Rummy. More recently, you could find her enjoying a rowdy night of Music Bingo.

She loved to travel. She had most recently returned from Las Vegas where she watched her grandson’s archery competition and was eagerly awaiting the Alaskan cruise they planned in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary. She also regularly traveled to celebrate Grandparents’ Day with out of state grandchildren and often road-tripped to watch the athletic competitions of the other grandkids. She created beautiful crafts and was never one to be outdone. She was so festive that each Christmas was a guaranteed surprise since she changed her home’s outdoor theme every year. She never missed a chance to celebrate life’s big and small moments. She was known for her holiday games. She’d spend weeks planning ways to drum up a little holiday head-to-head between her kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews which ended with uproarious laughter from all. Her bubbly spirit, open heart, and willingness to help anyone in need made her a beloved friend to all who knew her.

Brenda is survived by her loving husband, Thomas “Tommy”; daughters, Cynthia Rivas and her husband, Adrian; and Erin Evans and her husband, Mickey; daughter-in-law, Amanda Lopez; grandchildren, Brayden Evans, Katherine Lopez, Grayson Evans, Christian Lopez, Brady Rivas, Alicia Rivas, Sarah Evans, and Gabriel Lopez. She is preceded in death by her parents, M.B. and Delores Nelson; beloved son, Thomas Chase Lopez; brother, Tom Nelson; and sister, Janie Riley.

Her legacy will live on through the warmth of her family, the strength of her faith, and the countless lives she touched with her kindness.

A gathering of Mrs. Lopez’s family and friends will be 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 6:30p.m., Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Broussard’s, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at Infant Jesus Catholic Church, 243 South LHS Drive, Lumberton, with her interment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Beaumont.

To the Lopez and Rivas Family

My deepest condolences for this tremendous loss. I am so very sorry. But unfortunately y words do nothing to lessen this painful time in your life. And unfortunately, it does not subside, but it will get different with time.

I know how much she loved her grandchildren. It was evident in how proud she always was in her comments. I am glad I knew her, even if briefly. She was kind and loving and fun. I remember your baby shower Cindy and the Christmas party at my house and how generous and loving she was with Alicia’s friends. She was a gem.

It’s going to be hard. Brady and Alicia will miss her greatly. This all sucks. It’s so unreal. You have an advocate in Heaven. And now the two loving grandmas will watch over their grandchildren. I’m sure of that.

And my heart will break for your dad. He will be lost. I can only pray for the time when it becomes a little more bearable.

    Love you all.

    Pam
