Charles Francis Porter

July 25, 1940 - October 6, 2022

Charles “Charlie” Francis Porter, 82, went to be with Jesus on Thursday, October 6, 2022.  He was born July 25, 1940 to Sandy L. and Fannie Bell Porter.  On October 7, 1961, he married the love of his life, Betty Emmons.  He was an amazing husband, father, Pawpaw and friend.

Charlie was very proud of his two daughters and their families.  He was loved by just about everyone who met him.  He never met a stranger.  Charlie was fun-loving, energetic, friendly, and outgoing.  His greatest passions in his life were fishing and his family.  He was happiest when he and his family were out on the water reeling in big flounders.  He and his beautiful wife, Betty, were fantastic dancers who loved to jitterbug.  For them, all it took was two couples and a record player to have a party.  And they loved to entertain. Charlie was very creative and was an incredible artist.  He loved to draw, sketch, and paint.  He was very active in civic organizations over the years including the Nederland Heritage Festival Committee, Jaycees and Optimist Clubs.

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents; his three sisters, Marie Morgan, Fannie Bell Chancellor, and Lola Lee Reynolds; his brother, Sandy L. Porter, Jr.; and mother-in-law, Agnes Cryer Foster.

Those left to mourn him are his wife, Betty Emmons Porter; daughter, Debbie Griffin and Dan Mitchell; daughter, Kim Woods and Jay Woods; granddaughters, Cassie Harrison and her husband, Rob, and Jenna Crump; grandson, Colby Woods and Shannon Guidry; and three great-granddaughters, Brooklyn Harrison, Kayleigh Crump, and Amelia Crump.

Visitation for Charlie will begin at 1:00 p.m., with his funeral service at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, October 9, 2022, at Broussard’s, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee. His committal will be held at Broussard’s Crematorium.

    Betty, Debbie, and Kim…
We were so sorry to hear about Charles’ death.
May fond memories carry you all through this difficult time. Our memories of Charles revolve around our childhood when we all lived in LaBelle and gathered to play baseball games or hide and seek in our back field and yard. Charles’ daddy and my mother were siblings, so his Aunt Orie (my mom) and Uncle Nookie (my dad) lived just a few houses apart from from my Uncle Sandy and Aunt Fannie…My siblings were Gene (deceased in 2016), Darlene (deceased in 2020), Richard, Mike, Tim, Dennis, Terry, and Cindy. I am now the oldest, Dixie (married to Jack Kethley, who was also a teenage friend with Charles.) We will all miss Charles very much… Love & prayers for you all!

Charles Porter was the first person that we met at BayVue UMC in Crystal Beach. He invited us to join Betty and him at Coba’s after church. He told us that he would save us a place. Charles and Betty became our first close friends at the beach. We fished together, danced together, went on a cruise together and spent much time in each other’s houses. Charlie was unique in every way, and we are so grateful to have had him for a friend.

    Debbie Griffin says:

Thank you both for being such great friends to mom and dad. Also thanks again for bringing Brave Roman Soldier to me. You guys are such a blessing to my family. Love you!!

    Roxanne McCain says:

Uncle Charles was my favorite. We had a bond that started when he took me on my first night time rabbit hunt. I felt really special even more when he asked me to help him pick out the suit for his father’s funeral. When we talked he would always say “hi baby”. He always told me “you know your are my favorite.”

I am sure we were all his favorite, but he made me feel Like I was his favorite. He made everyone he knew feel special. I will miss calling him and hearing him say “hi baby”. He always sounded so excited to hear from me. I will miss that enthusiasm and cheerful greeting.

    Debbie Griffin says:

    Roxanne…Daddy adored you!

Betty and family, sending our deepest sympathy on the loss of Charlie. He was a fun loving person and definitely loved you and the family. Lost track of ya’ll after leaving the beach, never dreaming you lived here in Lumberton.
