Cookye Douglas
Cookye Douglas, 85, of Sour Lake, died Friday, January 30, 2026. She was born on October 30, 1940, in Goose Creek, to Polly Harris and David Cook.
Miss Cookye lived her life as a personal adventure, she played by her own rules, and she told her own stories. She enjoyed being contrarian and raising eyebrows. She never shied away from making a scene if she felt a scene was called for. She enjoyed holding court at Cookye’s Corner; she was a die-hard politico, talking politics with everyone who came by her office in Sour Lake.
Cookye lived largely and touched many lives. Her family includes her daughter, Leslie Free and her husband, Randy, of Sour Lake; son, Jack Wayne Douglas Jr and his family, Ako and Davonte, of San Francisco, California; bonus daughter, Leah Harold of Lytle; brother, David Cook and his wife, Faye, of Silsbee; sister, Jo Lynn King and her husband, L.J., of Silsbee; grandchildren, Brittany Stutes of Sour Lake; Haleigh Walker of Dallas; and Dana Roth and her husband, Clayton, of Carlsbad, California; great grandchildren, Aiden Stutes, Randy Roth, Everett Roth, Beverly Roth, and Robey Harold; and the person who touched her life in her last years, her caregiver, Patti Bares.
In death, she rejoins her husband, Jack Wayne Douglas Sr.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sour Lake Fire Department, 300 7th Street, Sour Lake, Texas 77659.
