Sherry Diane Perkins

August 29, 1954 - August 30, 2020

Sherry Diane Perkins, 66, of Silsbee, died Sunday, August 30, 2020.  She was born on August 29, 1954, in Kountze, to Norice Gilley Perkins and Joe Charles Perkins.

If you knew Diane Perkins, you knew that she spent many years working in law enforcement.  She invested a total of thirty-six years in this career, but her heart was complete when she worked as a school resource officer.  She spent eleven years at Silsbee Middle School as “Officer Perkins”, which the staff later nicknamed her as “OP”.  Diane could be stern at school when she needed to be, but she was also known for loving the kids in Silsbee ISD, and the kids loved her just as much.  Diane was always at sporting events and other school activities.  She kept up with what was going on in the lives of the kids at school and always encouraged them.  As much as Diane loved all the kids at school, she decided to retire in 2017.  She told everyone, “I’m going home to take care of my babies,” and took on the role of Dottie.  Dottie took care of her babies even when they were sick.  She never missed a class party, football game, or cheer competition.  Not only was Diane committed to her family, she also went above and beyond for others.  It was nothing for her to help someone, in secret, by providing school clothes, Christmas gifts, and helping with bills.  We are only now beginning to hear of these stories.  Diane Perkins was known as Aunt Diane to many, as well as Dottie, sister, Officer Perkins, OP, and friend to all.

Survivors include her sister, Connie Hawthorne and her husband, Jerry; niece, Andrea Jones and her husband, Andy; nephew, J.J. Hawthorne and his wife, Amy; and aunts, Martha Gray, and Lea Slaydon and her husband, Billy, all of Silsbee; great nieces and nephews, Kynslie Jones, Kacen Jones, Mikey Richardson, Paityn Hawthorne, Hayden Hawthorne, Davan Richardson, and Maddy Miller; and cousin, Rachel Fontaine and her husband, Billy, of Katy.  She is preceded in death by her parents; and brother, James “Butch” Perkins.

A gathering of Diane’s family and friends will begin at 3:00 p.m., with her funeral service at 5:00 p.m., Thursday, September 3, 2020, at Broussard’s, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee.  Her interment will follow at Resthaven Cemetery, Silsbee.

The family has requested that everyone in attendance please wear a mask.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Diane’s name to Silsbee Independent School District, 415 Highway 327, Silsbee, Texas 77656.

I worked around Diane around 1980. She was not scared of anything, always worked hard and helped anyone when she could. I gave her and Mr. Overstreet a pair of hand cuffs when I moved on.. RIP Diane.

Diane worked with my Mom and Step Dad at The Hardin County Sheriffs Department for many years. She was like part of our family and we loved her so much. I'm so sad to hear of her passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Connie and the rest of her family. I know she was met in Heaven by my Mama. I told her she was on her way.

Connie, Jerry and family... My heart is broken. Diane touched so many lives. I know she did mine. She took a green kid under her wing so many years ago and was instrumental in my professional path. Friend and mentor, she was one of a kind and will be dearly missed.. So many wonderful memories. My heart hurts for your loss. Hold tight to those memories for they are beautiful treasures. Anyone who knew her, knew how much she loved her family. Diane, you may have left this earth but you will always be in our hearts. Fly high Lady Di

I worked with Diane from 1979 until 1983 in law enforcement. Diane was a very nice young lady to work with and was always pleasant to be around. Diane will be missed very much, but she will never be forgotten by her family, her law enforcement family and her friends. May God Bless You And Be With You, Diane. Thank you for your true friendship forever.
