Doris Marie Laird
Doris Laird passed away on April 10, 2023, at Willowbrook Christian Village in Delaware, Ohio. She was born on June 12, 1940, in Vinton, Louisiana, the daughter of Leamon Aldredge and Hazel (Glover) Aldredge.
Doris graduated from Vinton High School in 1958. She was in the marching band and was selected to the Louisiana All-State Choir all 4 years of high school.
Doris moved to Beaumont, Texas, and married John Laird on June 18,1966. They were happily married for 56 years. She stayed home to raise her 2 daughters but eventually returned to work at MONY and KBMT television station where she retired in 2004. Doris was very involved in her church, Calvary Baptist Church in Beaumont, Texas. She participated in Women’s Bible studies, but her greatest joy came from singing in the choir. Doris didn’t miss a chance to perform in Calvary’s Christmas and Easter Musical. She also sang in The Messiah at McNeese University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, for over 30 years.
Doris was a loving wife but especially cherished her two daughters. She also delighted in spending time with her four grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Doris was predeceased by her younger sister, Anita Block. Surviving in addition to her husband, John Laird of Powell, Ohio, is her daughter, Stacy Palumbo and her husband, John Palumbo, of Nolensville, Tennessee, along with their children, Jordan and Jackson Palumbo of Knoxville, Tennessee; daughter, Robin Leger and her husband, Todd Leger, of Powell, Ohio, and their children, Blakelyn Leger of Conway, South Carolina and Gillian Leger, of Powell, Ohio. Doris is also survived by two sisters, Lollie Thompson of Sulphur, Louisiana and Elizabeth Black of Sweeny, Texas.
A gathering of Mrs. Laird’s family and friends will be at 1:00 p.m., with her celebration of life beginning at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.

God blesses all of us in many ways. My life was blessed by knowing Doris when we worked together at the Mutual Of New York life insurance agency in Beaumont. It was early in my career trying to learn this challenging business as an insurance professional. Doris was part of the administrative staff. Doris always greeted me with a smile, an encoraging word when I needed it. Doris was always quit to help me in any way she could. Fondly I remember Doris. Sadly I miss seeing her at the funeral as we live in Austin and only recently learneed of her passing. Doris lives on with our LORD & Savioior now. Doris lives on with her family and friends with memories held in our hearts. A great ldy…Doris Laird.

Prayers and condolences for the family. I have great memories of growing up in Beaumont and she is a part of them.
When I became a part of the Laird family in 1968, Doris and I quickly bonded. What tightened that bond was the birth of 2 daughters coinciding with the birth of her 2. With 4 girls within 16 months of age, we had our hands full! The cousins became best friends as Doris and I developed a sister relationship. We had such wonderful times together; made many memories! We would talk every morning, sometimes at our wits end, while other times rejoicing! I loved her like a sister!
Aunt Julia- she was truly blessed to have your friendship/sisterhood. I know she was truly saddened when y’all left Beaumont, but y’all always found an away to stay connected and get us girls together every summer. She cherished your friendship and I’m sure y’all were a great support for each other when us girls were young☺️ Thank you for your kind words❤️
It is tough when time and military service shift members of family to the far winds. My mother, Vera, sister of Doris’ mother, Hazel, married a fellow in the USAF from Wisconsin and moved from Louisiana around 1945. But with my father’s untimely death in 1959, Hazel and her daughters, Lollie, Elizabeth, Doris and Anita, gladly welcomed my mother and I into their family home. Doris and her sisters were always kind and caring, especially for a 11 year boy who was an only child now living in a domain of girls. I do recall from this time a gesture of kindness when this boy wondered why he was the only one without a doll – and fairly quickly a sock monkey appeared (that’s what girl cousins do), and somewhere in a box that has traveled with me during my adult life that sock monkey is still around. Doris as the singer had a voice that could stir your soul. The Aldredge girls were a rare set of ladies, the likes of which we seldom see these days. We are diminished by her loss, yet ever stronger because of her touch and presence.
I first knew Doris back in the 1950s at Calvary Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and I was organist. We discovered that our maiden names were the same except for the i/e in the middle, we had both lived in Vinton, Louisiana, and we had both attended the First Baptist Church in Vinton. It was an amazing connection! I knew and loved Doris for many years at Calvary where our musical connection continued through the years. I’m so sorry for your loss.
